As we expand our footprint in the Port of Newark, we are seeking a Business Development Manager with hands-on experience in drayage operations and port logistics to drive growth, cultivate client relationships, and develop new business opportunities.
Position Summary:
The Business Development Manager will be responsible for developing and executing strategic sales initiatives to expand the company’s drayage customer base in the Port of Newark region. This individual will leverage their deep understanding of port operations, terminal processes, and trucking logistics to identify opportunities, negotiate contracts, and build strong partnerships with shippers, freight forwarders, and ocean carriers.
Key Responsibilities:
Business Development & Sales
Identify, prospect, and secure new customers for drayage and intermodal transport services within the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal area.
Develop and maintain a robust sales pipeline aligned with revenue goals and strategic growth plans.
Conduct customer visits, presentations, and negotiations to close new business deals.
Collaborate with pricing, dispatch, and operations teams to ensure customer satisfaction and service excellence.
Monitor market trends, competitors, and rate structures to position the company competitively.
Relationship Management
Build and manage long-term relationships with key clients, vendors, and port authorities.
Act as the main point of contact for customer accounts, addressing service issues and providing solutions in coordination with operations.
Represent the company at local port and logistics networking events, industry associations, and trade shows.
Operational Collaboration
Work closely with dispatch, fleet, and terminal teams to ensure smooth service execution and customer onboarding.
Provide feedback from clients to improve operational efficiency and service offerings.
Support forecasting and capacity planning in coordination with management.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
5+ years of experience in business development, sales, or account management within drayage, intermodal, or port logistics operations.
Deep knowledge of Port of Newark operations, including terminal processes, EDI systems, and carrier requirements.
Established network within the port drayage, freight forwarding, and ocean carrier communities.
Proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales targets.
Strong negotiation, communication, and presentation skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
Preferred Skills:
Familiarity with TMS (Transportation Management Systems) and port visibility tools (e.g., PortTruckPass, PierPass, Terminal Access systems).
Experience managing dedicated fleets or owner-operator relationships.
Understanding of import/export documentation and customs processes.
