Job Title: Battery Engineer
Job Summary: Alsym Energy, Inc is looking for a self-driven and motivated engineer with a passion in the field of energy storage. In this role, you will lead the design, fabrication, and electrochemical testing of advanced sodium-ion cells. You will bridge the gap between fundamental materials research and practical cell engineering, taking novel chemistries from the lab bench to prototype and early-stage manufacturing.
Industry Background: Energy storage is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global energy economy, with annual stationary storage capacity additions projected to grow 23% per year from 2025 to 2035, driven by surging electricity demand from electrification, data centers, and AI infrastructure. Yet lithium-ion — the dominant technology — remains plagued by inherent flammability risks, high-profile fires that have eroded public trust, and fragile supply chains. Alsym Energy is developing non-flammable, high-performance sodium-ion batteries that solve these fundamental limitations to enable a new generation of safe and cost-effective energy storage based on globally abundant sodium.
Key Qualifications:
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- At least 4 years of industry experience working in the energy storage industry, with direct hands-on experience testing or building cells.
- General understanding of electrochemistry, battery thermodynamics, and kinetics.
- Experience with cell assembly in dry room and glovebox environments.
- Proficiency in using and programming battery testing hardware and software (Maccor, Arbin, Bio-Logic, etc.).
- Independence in data analysis, identification of structure-property relationships for materials and electrodes, and recommendation of follow-up experiments is expected.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage projects.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Support overall cell build activities, including pouch cell assembly and testing, using Maccor and Arbin battery cyclers.
- Assist a team of users with standard and advanced programming procedures to evaluate different cell operations and designs. This may also involve testing different duty cycles and environmental conditions, as well as safety characterizations.
- Develop, program, and execute comprehensive testing protocols using cyclers (e.g., Arbin, Maccor) to evaluate cell performance, including cycle life, rate capability, safety, and degradation mechanisms.
- Perform advanced electrochemical characterization (EIS, GITT, dQ/dV analysis) and collaborate with materials scientists to conduct initial characterization and post-mortem failure analysis (SEM, XRD, Raman).
- Process, analyze, and report test data and work with a team of engineers and scientists to analyze key findings.
