Product Designer / Principal Engineer (Contract) – Medical Device Development

We are partnering with a leading third-party medical device manufacturer to support their Product Development Center located in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago. This facility serves as the hub for R&D, prototyping, and new product development, working closely with customers to bring innovative medical devices to market. Manufacturing operations are based in Buffalo Grove.
We are hiring for two contract opportunities at different levels:
- Product Designer ($50–$70/hr)
- Principal Engineer ($70–$85/hr)
These roles will play a critical part in advancing new and existing product designs, collaborating cross-functionally, and supporting customer-driven development initiatives.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Support new product development (NPD/NPI) and design enhancements for medical devices
- Translate prototyping and testing feedback into design improvements
- Create and revise engineering drawings, ensuring proper documentation and version control
- Collaborate with internal teams and external customers on product requirements and design reviews
- Ensure compliance with design control processes and applicable regulatory standards
- Contribute to a fast-paced, hands-on R&D environment focused on innovation and quality
Product Designer Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in product or component design
- Strong background in plastic part design (medical device experience preferred but not required)
- Proficiency in SolidWorks
- Familiarity with Design Controls and structured product development environments
- Experience in regulated industries (medical device, aerospace, etc.) is a plus
- Knowledge of ISO 13485 is highly desirable
Principal Engineer Requirements
- Extensive experience in product development/design within the medical device industry
- Strong background in injection molding and designing plastic components
- Proven experience leading NPD/NPI initiatives and working directly with customers
- Ability to present and communicate effectively with clients and internal stakeholders
- Solid understanding of FDA regulations and compliance requirements
- Demonstrated leadership capability within engineering teams
