At Itera Mobility Engineering, we are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer responsible for the development of cockpit electronics, such as In-Vehicle Infotainment, cluster and central information displays and interior monitoring products to join our automotive engineering team in Northville MI 48168, US.
Main functions to develop:
- Lead the mechanical design and development of automotive display products integrated into instrument panels and seat backs, ensuring manufacturability and compliance with customer specifications and industry standards
- Bring hands-on experience with automotive cluster displays and/or center stack displays
- Select appropriate materials and perform engineering calculations to meet mass, strength, and performance targets
- Apply knowledge of head impact design requirements and safety standards
- Design and develop cover lens solutions (plastic or glass), including coatings such as AR, AG, AFP, and hard coat
- Contribute strong expertise in automotive interior packaging, fit & finish requirements
- Manage PCB packaging and support thermal management strategies
- Own and maintain the Bill of Materials (BoM) throughout development and engineering changes
- Generate and review GD&T and tolerance stack-up analyses; approve 3D and 2D deliverables
- Support DFMEA development and maintenance
- Provide inputs for thermal simulations and NVH-related FEA activities
- Ensure compliance with Class A surface appearance approval processes
- Define products to meet or exceed program QCD (Quality, Cost, Delivery) targets
- Select and support appropriate manufacturing processes (injection molding, stamping, casting, optical bonding, ultrasonic welding, etc.)
- Collaborate with suppliers on feasibility assessments and tooling development
- Support DV/PV testing and drive necessary design improvements
- Coordinate prototype builds and 3D-printed parts for development, validation, and issue resolution
- Proactively resolve design challenges, technical issues, and specification gaps with customers, suppliers, and internal teams
- Travel to customer engineering centers and manufacturing sites as needed during product launch phases
- Support program milestones in alignment with the Program Development Lead and internal tracking systems
- Contribute to RFI/RFQ activities, including BoM definition and initial packaging concepts
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to high ethical standards and professional integrity
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required
- Postgraduate education is a plus
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in a mechanical engineering role within an OEM or Tier-1 automotive environment
- Experience in packaging of automotive display products or similar systems
Skills and competencies:
- Proficiency or exposure to CAD and PLM tools (e.g., Teamcenter, CATIA, NX, or equivalent)
- Familiarity with interpreting mechanical, thermal, stress, and other FEA simulation results
- Working knowledge of FMVSS, IATF 16949, and ISO/IEC standards
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities
- Capable of managing ambiguity and complexity with a strong customer focus
