Fire Captain - Regular Status Chandler Firefighters & Fire Engineers Only
The City of Chandler will be conducting its promotional selection process for the position of
Fire Captain. Qualified applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that will be valid for two years.
This opportunity is only open to current regular status City of Chandler Firefighters and Fire Engineers.
Classification Summary
Provides supervision and leadership in protecting the community from emergency situations, including medical, fire, hazardous material exposure, and natural and manmade disasters, and to promote an environment of public safety within the City of Chandler. The Fire Captain will oversee the daily operation and maintenance of the fire station, apparatus, equipment and support the mission and values of the organization. The Fire Captain has responsibility for the discipline of the personnel and the proper maintenance of apparatus and equipment. May be called upon to exercise considerable independent judgment in hazardous situations involving potential loss of life and property.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5 years as a full-time firefighter with the Chandler Fire Department and currently holds the rank of Chandler Fire Engineer or has passed a Chandler promotional Fire Engineer examination process and has been placed on a Fire Engineer Eligibility List; and
- An associate or bachelor’s degree; in addition to or in conjunction with the degree requirements, candidates must have successfully completed the following college level courses. (Courses may be obtained through a college degree program or through successful completion of the Chandler Fire Department Captain Development Course.)
- Firefighting Tactics and Strategy - FSC204,
- Firefighter Safety and Building Construction - FSC 208 (Formerly FSC206),
- Human Resource Management in Fire Service FSC214 or Customer Service in the Public Sector - FSC215, and
- Command Strategies for Major Emergencies - FSC205 or Functions of Command - FSC174
- Valid State of Arizona Emergency Medical Care Technician (EMCT) Certification or Paramedic; and
- Valid State of Arizona Certification as an Arizona State Fire Fighter Level's I & II; and
- Must meet the qualifications to wear a tight-fitting respirator by passing a medical evaluation test in accordance with CFR 1910.134 by hire date and must maintain certification; and
- Must meet and maintain the National Fire Protection Association Standard 1582, Chapter 5.1 Essential Job Tasks; and
- Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
Note:All the above requirements must be met prior to the application closing date for the examination process. Proof of educational requirements, transcripts, and diploma must be submitted with the application. Copies are acceptable.

March 24, 2026.
Hiring Process
- Written Examination: Eligible applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to a multiple-choice written test. A score of 70% or higher is required to pass the test, currently scheduled for April 7, 2026. Total score will have a weight of 30%.
- Practical Testing: Applicants who receive a 70% or higher on the written test will be invited to participate in a tactical simulation and in-basket exercise. Each component will have a weight of 30%. The tactical simulation and in-basket exercises are currently scheduled for the week of April 20, 2026.
- Experience evaluation: Applicants with a minimum of 5 years as a full-time firefighter with the Chandler Fire Department. Total weight of 5%.
- Chief's Panel Interview: Applicants must pass the written test and both exercises from the assessment center to be invited to the Chief's panel interview. Total weight of 5%.
The examination process may vary if determined to be necessary.
Candidates that obtain score of 70% or higher in each of the testing components, except for “Experience Evaluation” and the “Fire Chief’s Interview”, will be placed on the Captain’s Promotional List.
