Nature of Work
Specialized work in protecting life and property through controlling and extinguishing fires, providing emergency medical and rescue services, and participating in fire prevention and training activities. At times, work will involve strenuous, extended exertion and an element of personal danger. Prompt and correct reactions are required even under critical, hazardous and adverse conditions, which may cause considerable physical and mental stress.
Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties
Firefighters perform multiple, complex and high-risk procedures and techniques in responding to fire an non-fire emergencies. The examples as listed are descriptions of essential functions and are not necessarily all inclusive. The omission of an essential function of work does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein.
- Assists in maintaining assigned apparatus and maintains personal gear to ensure operational readiness and personal protection.
- Attends roll call to receive assignments and current information.
- Cleans fire station and surrounding area to maintain a sanitary station free from operational impediments and to preserve life of equipment.
- Attends college level classes on firefighting/rescue techniques and apparatus and on methods of delivery.
- Attends college level classes to attain and maintain State of Florida issued Paramedic certification.
- Attends college level classes on code enforcement, building inspection, fire alarm systems and fire prevention to attain and maintain state and/or county certification.
- Participates in company drill sessions to increase proficiency in use of fire/rescue apparatus and tools.
- Participates in driver and apparatus operations training in order to transport personnel and equipment safely and quickly and to facilitate use of equipment if required to work above class.
- Participates in classes on local street grid system to locate addresses for dispatching and transporting personnel and equipment.
- Receives fire, rescue, non-fire emergency and non-emergency calls over air frequencies and land line communications to dispatch appropriate response vehicle(s) and to respond to citizen inquiries.
- Responds to non-fire, emergency calls.
- Responds to calls indicating a fire or fire alarm.
- Responds to non-emergency rescue calls to assess which, if any, services are needed; investigates; assists or transports citizens; and assists other public service agencies.
- Responds to public relations calls to provide non-emergency assistance to citizens and to maintain good public relations.
- Responds to emergency rescue calls to facilitate, assist, and stabilize victim's condition until professional medical care is available and to transport victim.
- Performs general maintenance, testing and repair of fire/rescue equipment to ensure operational readiness and to prolong life of equipment.
- Inspects buildings and structures to determine compliance with and to enforce fire safety codes in order to protect life and property from fire, explosives, and dangerous materials and for pre-fire planning. Work may be performed in a wide array of environments, including work in outside weather conditions, or in adverse conditions such as at a fire or rescue scene.
- Performs other duties as requested or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties above.
Minimum Requirements
CERTIFIED FIREFIGHTER
- Must possess a current and valid State of Florida Firefighter II Certification (Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training). Have current certification as a State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician, a State of Florida Paramedic certification is accepted in lieu of a State of Florida EMT certification. (National EMT certification will not be accepted in lieu of State of Florida EMT and Paramedic certifications).
- Must be 18 years of age at time of application be a high school graduate or its "equivalent".
- Be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination given by a physician according to the provisions of NFPA Standard 1582. .
- Must be able to work rotating shifts including weekends and holidays and be available to work 24/7.
- Must demonstrate good moral character and meet all qualifications in the Florida State Statute Number 633.34, "Firefighters; qualifications for employment"
- "Be a non-user of tobacco or tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application, as evidenced by a sworn affidavit of the applicant", (Florida Statute
- 633.34(6)).
- Must have a driver's license with a good driving record and obtain a Florida driver's license prior to appointment.
- Obtain a Florida Class "D" driver's license with an "E" endorsement within six (6) months of appointment and maintain it through employment without any restrictions affecting job performance.
- Must obtain a State of Florida issued Paramedic Certification (within three years of appointment).
- Possess and maintain valid State of Florida Certification for Firefighter and State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic throughout employment as required. Failure to obtain and/or maintain certifications as required will be cause for termination.

Bonus points will be given to applicants with the following:

Physical Requirements
- Must be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination given by a physician according to the provisions of NFPA Standard 1582.
- Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, word processor, calculator, copier,
- Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling.
- Must have physical capability to lift and carry or drag people and objects weighing in excess of 150 pounds.
- Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, climb and crawl into confined spaces while wearing approximately 70 pounds of protective clothing and equipment.
- Ability to perform tasks requiring balance, motor-coordination and dexterity.
- Ability to swim.
- Must have the ability to work at heights (e.g., on roofs, sides of buildings, elevator shafts).
- Must be able to work variable shifts, including shifts that require 24-hours of consecutive duty, including nights, weekends, holidays and during emergencies, mobilization, and natural disasters. Work schedules are assigned by the Fire Chief based on departmental needs and may include work hours varying from the above.
Required Examination
MANDATORY ORIENTATION SESSION
Those applicants who successfully complete the application process and meet the minimum requirements for the Certified Firefighter will be required to attend a mandatory Orientation Session and a Physical Ability Test (PAT is required only if selected for an interview). If an undue, unexpected hardship prevents an applicant from attending the orientation session, an exception may be made on a case-by-case basis. Undue unexpected hardship will be solely at the Fire Chiefs discretion. The applicants will receive an e-mail notification via NeoGov with instructions on self-scheduling for one of the following orientation sessions.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION
All qualifying applicants will be required to take a written examination. Additional details regarding this written examination will be provided at a future date.
