The Capacity Manager is responsible for leading, coaching, and developing a team of Capacity Representatives responsible for securing carrier capacity and ensuring successful execution of customer freight. This role drives carrier network growth, load coverage, margin performance, and operational efficiency while maintaining strong relationships with carriers and transportation partners.
The ideal candidate is a logistics professional with experience in freight brokerage, carrier sales, or transportation operations who can develop a high-performing team and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, coach, and mentor a team of Capacity Representatives.
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, training sessions, and performance reviews.
- Establish daily, weekly, and monthly activity goals and performance expectations.
- Develop and implement onboarding and training programs for new team members.
- Foster a culture of accountability, urgency, and continuous improvement.
Carrier Development & Capacity Procurement
- Oversee carrier sourcing and capacity procurement efforts.
- Develop strategies to expand and strengthen the carrier network.
- Support the team in securing carrier capacity for customer freight.
- Assist with carrier negotiations to maximize profitability and service levels.
- Maintain strong relationships with key carriers and transportation partners.
Operational Execution
- Ensure freight is covered efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Monitor shipment execution and address service issues proactively.
- Collaborate with Account Managers and Operations teams to ensure customer expectations are met.
- Resolve escalated carrier and service-related issues.
- Monitor market conditions and adjust carrier strategies accordingly.
Performance Management
- Track and analyze team performance metrics, including:
- Loads Covered
- Gross Margin
- Carrier Growth
- Carrier Retention
- Load Acceptance Rates
- On-Time Performance
- Daily Call Activity
- Develop action plans to improve team productivity and profitability.
- Provide regular reporting and performance updates to leadership.
Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve carrier procurement processes and operational efficiency.
- Promote best practices within the capacity team.
- Ensure proper utilization of the Transportation Management System (TMS) and other operational tools.
- Maintain compliance with company policies and transportation regulations.
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of experience in freight brokerage, carrier sales, logistics, or transportation operations.
- 1+ years of leadership or team management experience.
- Strong understanding of truckload transportation and carrier procurement.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience working with Transportation Management Systems (TMS).
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and the ability to quickly learn and utilize transportation and logistics software platforms.
- Ability to analyze data, generate reports, and leverage technology to improve operational efficiency and decision-making.

- Experience managing a freight brokerage capacity team.

- Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field.
