BASIC FUNCTIONS:
The Civil Construction Pipelayer is responsible for the installation of underground utility systems, including laying, joining, aligning, and sealing pipe sections in accordance with project plans and safety standards. This role performs trench work, bedding, compaction, shoring, and line-and-grade control while maintaining overall trench safety. The Pipelayer works closely with Foremen, Superintendents, equipment operators, and crew members to ensure efficient, accurate, and safe utility mainline construction.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Pipe Installation & Utility Work
- Lay, join, align, wrap, and seal pipe sections in accordance with project requirements and manufacturer specifications.
- Install gravity storm, sanitary sewer, pressure sewer, and water main piping systems.
- Measure and cut pipe to correct lengths using appropriate cutting equipment.
- Inspect, clean, align, and install joints and fittings to manufacturer and project standards.
- Perform taps or drill holes for auxiliary utility connections as required.
Trenching, Grade & Safety
- Ensure pipe is installed to exact line and grade using lasers, levels, and measuring tools.
- Guide equipment operators during trench excavation to achieve proper depth and alignment.
- Perform hand excavation and grading as needed to complete installations.
- Place and maintain trench shoring systems and ensure trench safety at all times.
- Compact bedding and backfill using jumping jacks, plate compactors, mechanical equipment, or shovel chinking to prevent pipe ovaling.
- Apply extensive knowledge of soil conditions and shoring techniques in compliance with OSHA trenching and sloping regulations.
Coordination & General Duties
- Communicate clearly with top-hand personnel and equipment operators using verbal and hand signals to support efficient workflow.
- Work collaboratively with crew members in a team-oriented environment.
- Follow direction from the Foreman regarding daily tasks, sequencing, and productivity.
- Assist with general labor duties as required to support job-site operations.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and OSHA requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of related utility or civil construction experience.
- Ability to lift 60 lbs regularly and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently kneel, squat, bend, stoop, twist, and reach overhead with repetitive motion.
- Strong understanding of underground utility installation, piping systems, and trench safety.
- Ability to learn quickly and manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Active Oregon driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
