The Mechanical Engineer will design, develop, test, and transition vehicle and sonar systems from Engineering to Production. The Mechanical Engineer will understand vehicle system dynamics, pressure vessels, actuators, servos, and demonstrate a broad understanding of manufacturing methods. This is a “hands on” position with a heavy emphasis on design, troubleshooting, analysis and testing, and developing improvements.

Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, test and transition vehicle and sonar systems from Engineering to Production.
- Participate in sea tests when required.
- Identify and quantify design flaws, create improvements using a data driven approach.
- Lead ECN / ECR activities to approve mechanical designs.
- Ensure best practices are followed through team review and personal oversight.
- Supports and participates in continuous improvement activities that positively affect safety, the environment, quality, reliability, and productivity or improve the overall suitability and effectiveness of the management system.
- Recommend and implement improvements to production processes, plant layout, methods and controls.
- Performs product/process analysis for cost reduction, quality improvement and improved efficiency.
- Analyzes existing operating methods and initiates and develops new methods to improve cost, reliability and quality of products and processes.
- Maintains competency with respect to technical skills by attending training classes, special technical and administration courses, independent research, seminars, exhibits and trade shows as needed.
- Works closely with engineering staff, production, and operations.
Qualifying Attributes and Skills
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
- Relevant “hands-on” experience working in an Engineering Services or Manufacturing environment.
- Strong background in mechanical design of underwater or marine systems, including pressure vessels, structural components, and integrated assemblies.
- Experience designing and integrating sensor systems (e.g., sonar arrays, DVLs, INS/AHRS, acoustic sensors) with consideration for mounting, alignment, and environmental constraints.
- Solid understanding of systems-level integration, including mechanical-electrical interfaces, cable routing, sealing, and serviceability.
- Experience with hydrodynamic design of submerged bodies, including drag, stability, and control surface effectiveness.
- Working knowledge of foil design and control surfaces (lift/drag tradeoffs, aspect ratio, AoA sensitivity, stability impacts).
- Experience designing for tow bodies or submerged vehicles, including tow point placement, CG/CB management, and dynamic stability.
- Familiarity with CFD tools (e.g., SolidWorks Flow, STAR-CCM+, ANSYS) and ability to interpret results for design decisions.
- Experience with analytical and empirical modeling of forces, moments, and system behavior in water (e.g., tow dynamics, cable effects, downforce estimation).
- Understanding of materials and manufacturing methods for marine environments (aluminum, composites, urethane casting, corrosion mitigation).
- Strong CAD skills (preferably SolidWorks) with experience managing large assemblies and drawing packages.
- Familiarity with tolerance analysis and fit-up for complex assemblies, especially with mixed materials and sealing requirements.
- Experience supporting prototype builds, integration, and test, including hands-on debugging and iteration.
- Ability to translate system-level requirements into detailed mechanical designs with clear interfaces and performance traceability.
- Understand the engineering and quality management system processes to ensure compliance to ISO standards.
- Professionalism, with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines.
- Strong problem solving and time management skills, a results-oriented work ethic, and ability to work alone with limited direct supervision.
- Ability to work with technical staff and customers with varying levels of experience.
