Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for a Storekeeper I within the Water Distribution Division. This position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness inventory, building and surrounding grounds of the Hollister storehouse and providing excellent customer service to Utilities Operations employees. Work involves procuring, receiving, stowing and distributing utilities repair supplies and equipment and various administrative tasks.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Reviews replenishment reports and monitors supply levels to determine items to be purchased, solicits written quotes from vendors to identify lowest price, creates procurement package worksheets documenting commodity codes, description, quantities, price quotes and accounting codes for items to be purchased, places and confirms orders and researches order discrepancies.
- Receives ordered materials by unloading freight, checking condition and verifying quantities of received items, entering electronic receiver documents into the financial system (AFMS), records delivery date, receiver number and purchase order information on bills of lading, stows materials designated locations using forklift or cantilever ladder.
- Compiles procurement packages for material orders containing invoices, bills of lading and vendor quotes, verifies accuracy of invoices by ensuring all materials were received and invoice price matches written quotes, researches and resolves any identified discrepancies.
- Disperses materials to Wastewater and Water Distribution employees by receiving material issue requisitions, reviewing paperwork for accuracy and proper signatures, entering data into the financial system i.e. commodity codes, quantities and accounting information and retrieving the requested materials from storehouse shelves or yard.
- Assists with maintaining accurate inventory information by counting and sorting stock, verifying locations and labeling materials, reporting and correcting count and location discrepancies.
- Lifts, carries, pushes/pulls and handles boxes and other materials weighing up to 50 – 75 pounds. Stows and retrieves materials from storehouse shelving units using cantilever ladder. Operates heavy equipment/forklift to stow and load pallets, boxes and materials weighing over 75 lbs.
- Maintains the storehouse building and grounds by cutting and maintaining lawn, applying pesticides, maintaining an orderly warehouse space, sweeping storehouse floor.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Six months in supply operations.
The preferred candidate will be certified to operate a forklift.

Valid Driver's License
Ability to stand for long periods of time, climb stairs and lift up to 75 lbs.
Work Location: 1316 Ballentine Boulevard, Norfolk, Virginia
Work Hours: Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (NIGHT AND WEEKEND STANDBY DUTY IS REQUIRED)
This position is designated as an 'Essential' position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, on call, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.

- Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply.
