Notice of Promotional Examination
This announcement applies to persons who are receiving pay as regular City employees within the Springfield Fire Department. Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process detailed below.
Written Examination
Date: April 7, 2026
Time: 1:30 PM
Location: Fire Training Center – 2620 W. Battlefield
Practical Examination
Date: April 29 and 30, 2026
Location: Practical Training Annex
Dates & Times of practical portions will be assigned to candidates individually. Must arrive 10 - 15 minutes prior to all scheduled testing time.
Please Note: The City reserves the right to adjust any scheduled dates, times and/or locations as needed.
Written Examinations (50% of overall score)
The Written Test Will Have a Total Value Of 100 Points Possible With a Minimum Passing Score Of 70% Of Total Points Possible. The Written Test Is Multiple-choice. Questions In The Written Examination Are Covered In The Following Manuals Or Documents

Questions or concerns regarding written exam questions will be accepted after completion of the examination, pursuant to Section 2.04 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Appeals must be submitted in writing no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, April 10, 2026. Candidates may review the examination between 8:00AM - 5:00PM on April 8th, 9th, and 10th in the Human Resources Department.
Practical Examination (50% of the overall score)
All candidates who successfully pass the written examination will move onto the practical examination. All candidates will complete the entire practical examination. No scores will be communicated during this portion of the test.
Skills
The Practical Examination will consist of a series of equally weighted rescue operation exercises. Candidates must successfully pass each exercise of the practical examination to receive a final score. These exercises will assess skills that have been covered in academies up to the rescue academy including skills such as the following:
- Rope Skills related to Awareness and Operations Level training Vehicle stabilization and extrication
- Fireground skills including forcible entry, search, and VEIS
- Technical rescue skills involving structural collapse, confined space, and trench rescue
Questions or concerns regarding the practical exams will be accepted after completion of feedback sessions, which will be held no later than May 4th, 2026. Per Section 2.04 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement candidates will have five (5) calendar days from the last day of feedbacks to submit written appeals over the assessment center. The eligibility list will be established after appeals have been addressed.
Length Of Service
Prior to the establishment of a promotional Eligible List, an employee with an overall passing score shall be awarded these seniority points:
- Zero points for less than five years' service with the City of Springfield;
- One point for five or more years, but less than ten years' service with the City of Springfield;
- Two points for ten or more years, but less than fifteen years' service with the City of Springfield;
- Three points for fifteen or more years, but less than twenty years' service with the City of Springfield;
- Four points for twenty or more years' service with the City of Springfield
Final Score
All persons with an overall passing score will be placed on the Eligibility List.
Primary Purpose
Performs duties required of a rescue company when responding to fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, and special operations incidents.
NOTICE OF EXAM: The eligible list established as a result of this posting will be used for this job classification for a minimum of six months or until the list is exhausted.

Qualifications And Requirements
Experience, Education, and Training
- Must have at least four years of continuous service as a Firefighter in the Springfield Fire Department as of the announcement closing date.
Licensing/Certification
- Must possess a valid Driver's License.
- Must be a Missouri certified Emergency Medical Technician or successfully complete the necessary training and become a Missouri certified Emergency Medical Technician during the probationary period as a Rescue and Salvage Specialist (EMT class availability may require an extension of the normal six-month probationary period in order to complete certification).
- Must maintain Missouri Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification throughout the appointment to Rescue and Salvage Specialist position.
- Must obtain certification as an Apparatus Driver/Operator through the Missouri Division of Fire Safety within 12 months of appointment.
- Must certify to the most current Missouri Division of Fire Safety adopted standard for: Rope Core, Rope Rescue Technician I and II, Confined Space Rescue Technician, Trench Rescue Technician, and Structural Collapse Technician with a maximum extension of 24 months from date of appointment based upon availability of required training.

Other Requirements
NOTE: The last service rating received must have been satisfactory per Merit Rule 10.1 (c). The eligible list established by the examination shall expire six (6) months from the date established or when exhausted unless extended per Merit Rule 6.4 (a).
