Mechanical Engineer
Location: State College, PA | Company: Guidedwave
Status: Full-Time | Clearance: U.S. Citizenship Required
The Opportunity
Are you a Mechanical Engineer who loves to build what you design? Guidedwave is looking for a hands-on engineer to join our 20-person team. We are a specialized R&D firm developing advanced sensors, robotics, and scanning equipment for the nuclear, defense, and energy sectors.
This is not a "cubicle-only" job. You will be an essential part of a multi-disciplinary team, helping us move projects from the CAD screen to the machine shop, and ultimately out into the field for testing at some of the most high-security facilities in the world.
The Role
In this position, you will support the development and manufacturing of our specialized NDE (Non-Destructive Evaluation) equipment. You will work closely with our Senior Engineers to design mechanical components and assemblies, assist in prototype fabrication, and ensure our systems are ready for high-stakes deployments.
We do not expect you to be an expert in robotics or ultrasonics. We are looking for a reliable, energetic self-starter who is eager to learn our specialized technology and contribute to a team solving "one-of-a-kind" technical problems.
Key Responsibilities
- Mechanical Design: Use CAD (Pro/E, Creo, or similar) to design components and assemblies for robotics, scanners, and sensors.
- Hands-on Fabrication: Oversee and assist with the fabrication and assembly of prototypes in our in-house lab.
- Field Operations: Support the team during on-site technology demonstrations and field testing – including travel to domestic and international locations.
- Quality & Documentation: Maintain accurate CAD data, create detailed drawings for vendors, and assist with Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- System Testing: Perform lab-based testing to confirm that our mechanical systems can handle the rigors of industrial environments and perform as specified.
Qualifications
- Citizenship: Due to the sensitive nature of our work, U.S. Citizenship is strictly required.
- Education: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in CAD software and a solid understanding of mechanical assemblies.
- The "Builder" Instinct: You should be comfortable using hand tools and shop equipment. Experience with CNC machining or 3D printing is a major plus.
- Team Player: A proactive collaborator who thrives in a lean team environment, demonstrating the reliability and communication skills necessary to solve complex problems alongside researchers and technicians.
- Adaptability: Ready and willing to travel for field work and pivot between different tasks as project needs change.
Why Join Guidedwave?
- Incredible Variety: You will rarely work on the same thing twice. You’ll be exposed to robotics, sensors, and advanced physics every day.
- Elite Field Experience: Gain access to specialized facilities and equipment that few engineers ever see.
- Mentorship: Work directly with industry experts who will help you expand your skill set into new and emerging technologies.
