We are seeking one-(1) uniformed Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) or California state EMT equivalent for Alcatraz Island to provide emergency medical services (EMS) on the island. Contract personnel will work under Medical Direction of the assigned NPS Medical Director and follow all protocols and procedures.
Period of contract: 03/15/2026 – 03/14/2027 with an option to extend contract from 03/15/2027 – 08/31/2027
TOUR OF DUTY:
- Normal Hours of Service: Services begin at the Pier with the first staff boat to Alcatraz at 8:20 am and end when the provider returns back from the island 6:45-9:45 pm. In general, this is an 8, 10, 11, 12 or 13-hour shifts.
- Operational hours may be limited due to operational limitations and/or unplanned island closures. This may be due to power outage, high winds/seas, Government Shutdown, or other factors. The Contractor must remain flexible and adaptable to unscheduled island closures. Staff will receive 4 hours pay.
Federal Holidays: *Alcatraz Island will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
- Presents himself/herself in a professional manner and displays a good public image for the employee and Contractor in accordance with company policy.
- Completes appropriate documentation in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Conducts foot patrols through densely populated, high traffic areas carefully observing visitors and/or employees experiencing medical emergencies.
- Provides an environment and equipment conducive to safety for patients, family members, visitors, and employees and in compliance with set precautions and approved standards.
- Assesses risks to patient safety.
- Operates the emergency vehicle in a safe manner at all times.
- Always maintain vehicle and stations in a clean and presentable manner. The EMT should strive to exceed expectations of cleanliness of vehicles and stations.
- Maintains communications equipment, medical equipment, and supplies in accordance with applicable standards.
- Attend Island All Staff meetings to stay informed on projects and access issues
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. The individual in this position must possess the following qualifications:
- Current NREMT Basic or higher-level emergency medical services credential or California State equivalent
- Current state driver’s license
- Satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Contractors driving policy
- Excellent communication and customer service skills \
- Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and medical agencies to provide the highest level of patient care.
- Ability to read and interpret all required documents and write required reports and correspondence
- Physical ability to perform all tasks required in the performance of typical EMT duties including but not limited to bending / stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting at established weight requirements, climbing, working at heights, etc. (satisfactorily meet company physical assessments/tests).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals, teams, managers, supervisors, and external partners.
- Must have the ability to consistently deliver outstanding customer service to all internal and external customers.
- Strong organization skills and attentiveness to detail.
- Ability to always maintain a professional manner and appearance.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: The individual in this position must possess the following education requirements:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Current NREMT certification or California State equivalent.
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR for the Healthcare Provider card.
