Position Overview
A leading heavy civil contractor operating in the New York City metro area is seeking an experienced Fleet Manager to oversee and optimize its company-wide vehicle fleet and support equipment operations.
This role is responsible for managing a large, high-utilization fleet supporting complex public infrastructure projects across NYC. The Fleet Manager will oversee procurement, maintenance coordination, compliance, asset tracking, cost control, and lifecycle planning for company-owned vehicles and select support equipment.
The ideal candidate brings strong operational discipline, cost management expertise, and deep familiarity with NYC-area regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Operations & Asset Management
- Oversee all company-owned vehicles including pickup trucks, service trucks, dump trucks, support trailers, and light-duty equipment
- Develop and manage preventative maintenance programs to ensure fleet reliability and uptime
- Track utilization, fuel usage, and operating costs to optimize fleet efficiency
- Manage fleet lifecycle planning including procurement, replacement strategy, and asset disposal
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all NYSDOT, NYCDOT, FMCSA, and NYC regulatory requirements
- Oversee vehicle registrations, inspections, toll programs, permits, and licensing
- Coordinate insurance claims and accident investigations
- Maintain DOT records, driver qualification files, and safety documentation
Vendor & Shop Coordination
- Manage relationships with maintenance vendors, dealerships, leasing providers, and repair facilities
- Negotiate service agreements and pricing structures
- Coordinate with internal mechanics or third-party service providers to minimize downtime
Technology & Reporting
- Administer fleet management software and telematics platforms
- Monitor GPS tracking, idle time, and fuel performance
- Generate monthly fleet performance reports for executive leadership
- Identify cost-saving and operational efficiency initiatives
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Operations, Equipment, and Project Management teams to forecast fleet needs
- Support project mobilization planning across NYC boroughs
- Coordinate vehicle assignments to meet shifting project demands
Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in fleet management within construction, heavy civil, utilities, or infrastructure industries
- Strong understanding of DOT compliance, vehicle inspections, and NYC regulatory requirements
- Experience managing large, multi-site fleets in high-utilization environments
- Proficiency with fleet management software and telematics systems
- Strong budgeting and cost control experience
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
Preferred Experience
- Experience in union environments
- Familiarity with heavy civil operations and infrastructure project logistics
- CDL or knowledge of commercial vehicle operations
- Experience supporting 100+ vehicle fleets
