Reports to: VP of Operations
About the roleAnimalBiome is hiring a hands-on Logistics Manager to lead our direct-to-consumer fulfillment and parcel shipping operations in Oakland. You will manage a team of three full-time associates (two dedicated to fulfillment and one split between fulfillment and facilities) and oversee daily shipping execution, carrier relationships, and pack-out quality to deliver consistent performance across speed, accuracy, cost, and customer experience.
A major focus of this role is owning the transition of DTC fulfillment to a 3PL. You will lead partner selection and onboarding, define end-to-end workflows and service levels, and build the operational cadence that keeps performance high after go-live. You will also own international shipping compliance and issue resolution, and support Amazon logistics execution as needed.
What you’ll doTeam leadership and accountability- Lead a team of three associates: set daily priorities, assign work, and ensure coverage.
- Train, coach, and develop direct reports through regular 1:1s, feedback, and performance reviews, including corrective action when needed.
- Establish and maintain operational standards across pick/pack accuracy, ship times, scan compliance, and returns/RTS handling.
- Run hiring, onboarding, and training for fulfillment roles in partnership with HR as needed.
- Drive continuous improvement to increase throughput, reduce errors, and strengthen day-to-day execution.
- Partner cross-functionally to resolve issues quickly and keep operations running smoothly.
DTC fulfillment and parcel shipping operations- Manage daily pick/pack/ship operations for all DTC orders using ShipStation.
- Ensure orders ship accurately and on time, aligned with internal expectations and customer experience goals.
- Coordinate parcel shipping execution across carriers, including service selection, label compliance, pickups, and exception handling.
- Maintain packaging standards and pack-out quality to reduce damages and control shipping costs, including DIM and packaging impacts.
- Improve returns and RTS workflows, reducing delivery failures and repeat issues.
- Prepare for peak and holiday periods, including staffing plans, cutoffs, capacity planning, and contingency coverage.
3PL selection, onboarding, and ongoing performance management- Lead the selection and onboarding of a third-party fulfillment partner to take over DTC fulfillment.
- Build the implementation plan and own the go-live execution, ensuring a smooth transition with minimal disruption.
- Define and document end-to-end workflows for the partner: order routing, shipping methods, packaging standards, returns/RTS handling, and customer experience requirements.
- Set SLAs and scorecards (order-to-ship, accuracy, damage rate, exception rate, on-time delivery) and run regular business reviews.
- Manage the relationship and escalation path, driving issue resolution, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate inventory flows with the partner, including replenishment planning, transfers, receiving expectations, reconciliations, and discrepancy resolution.
Carrier management and claims- Serve as the primary point of contact for parcel carriers, including escalations, issue resolution, rate discussions, and performance reviews.
- Manage claims for lost and damaged shipments: documentation, follow-up, recoveries, and prevention actions.
- Track carrier performance across on-time delivery, scan compliance, damage/loss, exceptions, and RTS.
- Maintain reliable daily outbound operations through consistent pickup and handoff coordination.
International shipping compliance and issue resolution- Oversee international shipping execution and compliance across supported countries.
- Maintain accurate HS codes, customs descriptions, and required customs data and ensure correct configuration in ShipStation and carrier systems.
- Maintain country-specific requirements and restrictions and implement controls to prevent non-compliant shipments.
- Resolve customs-related issues including holds, rejections, documentation errors, and duties/taxes questions, using clear escalation paths and internal response expectations.
- Keep a documented, auditable process for HS codes, restrictions, customs descriptions, and destination-specific requirements.
Systems and reporting- Maintain ShipStation configuration and controls including service mappings, label rules, customs settings, address validation, and user controls.
- Establish a reporting cadence, including weekly operations reporting and a monthly carrier and international review with action items.
- Use data to identify issues, prioritize improvements, and implement durable process fixes.
Cross-functional coordination and risk management- Partner closely with Customer Care on customer-facing guidance for delays, duties/taxes, claims timelines, and shipping exceptions.
- Coordinate with Finance and leadership on carrier invoices, claims recoveries, and cost initiatives.
- Create contingency plans for carrier disruptions, weather events, system downtime, and peak volume spikes, including alternate services and manual workflows.
- Directly manage facilities support through the associate who splits time between fulfillment and facilities, ensuring day-to-day site needs are met.
What we’re looking for- 5+ years of experience in logistics, fulfillment, or operations, including direct people management.
- Strong parcel shipping and carrier management experience (UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL preferred).
- Experience owning international shipping compliance (HS codes, customs documentation, restrictions, and issue resolution).
- Experience setting performance expectations, coaching, and running performance reviews.
- Experience selecting, onboarding, and managing a 3PL relationship, including SLAs, scorecards, audits, and corrective actions.
- Strong operational systems skills; ShipStation experience strongly preferred.
- Comfortable working across Shopify and Amazon Seller Central in daily operations
- Clear communicator, highly organized, and able to manage multiple shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
