About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Public Information Specialist to support local government debris-recovery operations following a disaster. This position plays a critical role in ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant public communication throughout the debris removal process. Work may include establishing public information channels, managing citizen inquiries, coordinating with County staff, and supporting federally reimbursable documentation requirements.
This role supports disaster-related operations and may require rapid deployment, extended hours, and work in a high-volume, high-visibility environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesPublic Information & Outreach
- Assist the County in public outreach related to debris recovery efforts immediately following an event.
- Draft, publish, and distribute press releases, public notices, FAQs, website content, talking points, and community guidance.
- Develop clear public messaging on debris removal schedules, routes, eligibility, and safety protocols.
Debris Hotline Operations
- Establish and staff a debris hotline, including procurement/setup of phones, computers, and other necessary equipment.
- Maintain accurate logs of public complaints, questions, and resolutions.
- Provide real-time issue escalation to County leadership and field operations teams.
- Ensure hotline operations meet FEMA Public Assistance requirements for cost eligibility and documentation.
Website & Digital Communication
- Create or update a public-facing debris recovery webpage with current information, maps, and updates.
- Manage updates related to collection zones, operational changes, deadlines, and community notifications.
- Monitor online submissions or complaint forms and route appropriately.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and complete records of all public information activities to maximize FEMA reimbursement.
- Ensure all communications adhere to FEMA Public Assistance guidelines and the County’s communication protocols.
- Provide daily and weekly activity reports to County leadership and the debris monitoring team.
QualificationsRequired
- Professional experience in public information, emergency management, communications, or disaster recovery.
- Strong writing skills with the ability to draft clear, concise public messaging under pressure.
- Experience managing high-volume public inquiries (call center, hotline, customer service center, or EOC Joint Information Center).
- Ability to work extended hours during disaster response operations.
- Proficiency with communication platforms, website editing, and hotline/call-center systems.
Job Types: Contract, Temporary
Pay: $60.00 - $80.00 per hour
