Job Description
General Functions:
Performs inspections of assigned projects for the Public Works Division. This is skilled technical work performed under field conditions. An employee assigned to this classification is responsible for performing a wide variety of inspections in the civil engineering and construction field to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, codes and other applicable regulations.
Work is performed with some independence under the general supervision of the assigned supervisor.
Representative Duties/Assignments:
¿ Performs inspections of roadway construction activities and materials to ensure full compliance with approved plans and specifications.
¿ Determines quantities for materials used and amount of work completed.
¿ Ensures public safety and traffic management at construction sites.
¿ Maintains daily diary/log of project activities.
¿ Receives and responds to public inquiries and complaints.
¿ Interprets approved plans, specifications and County regulations and applies them during field inspections.
¿ Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports, including engineering drawings, photographs, contracts and agreements, technical reports, invoices, billing statements, change order requests, project diary, memos and correspondence.
¿ Attend administrative meetings, pre-bids, pre-construction meetings, and project walk-throughs, as assigned.
¿ Perform data entry of completed inspections in database (IOM)
¿ Participate in emergency operations, including preparation, response and recovery due to adverse weather events, as assigned.
¿ Performs Other Duties As Required.
Minimum Qualifications:
ENGINEERING INSPECTOR I:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and two (2) years of engineering experience in roadway construction or maintenance supervision or maintenance inspection; or an equivalent combination of related education, training or experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
ENGINEERING INSPECTOR II:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent and four (4) years of engineering experience in roadway construction or maintenance supervision or maintenance inspection; or an equivalent combination of education, training or experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license. Depending on area of assignment, must have satisfactorily completed the Contractor¿s Underground Utility Examination for inspectors or must complete within 12 months of entry into the position. Must have the ability to communicate with the general public while discussing, explaining and interpreting standards and codes.
Preferences:
- Knowledge of FDOT standards and regulations
- Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, database management
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Understanding of technical specifications and requirements
- Ability to produce weekly activities, status and project reports and other reports as requested.
- Ability to measure roads for resurfacing, areas for mowing, etc. and accurately calculate quantities for performance of projects.

Pay Grade: 013 - From $21.51 to $27.96
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
ENGINEERING INSPECTOR II:
Pay Grade: 014 - From $23.19 to $30.14
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
