What You'll Do
The Project Engineer, Controls & Automation will support all Health and Wellness Division Capital and cost optimization projects across the KIND, Natures Bakery and trü frü Business Units.
Responsible for supporting execution and delivery of projects and strategic programs across the North American Region for the Health & Wellness division In the areas of controls and automation. To provide controls and automation engineering support and project management, technical and engineering support to Manufacturing, Technical Operations, Brand Innovation, Brand Change and Procurement organizations.
The Project Engineer, Controls & Automation is accountable for evaluating engineering and technical solutions to support controls and automation for projects across the North American region for the Mars Health & Wellness platform. The role is required to make decisions within the project and negotiate with suppliers or internal customers to help deliver the expectations for the benefit of the Health & Wellness platform, within policies and guidelines, delivering projects on time and within budget.
How You'll Do It...
- Play an key-role in coaching and development of team members through 1-1 meetings
- Close collaboration with central IE and S&F for the overall CAB management in the region: phasing, submission approval timings, reporting, performance management, overheads delivery.
- Co-create with X-segment peers development opportunities for the full engineering community (C-weeks, dedicated trainings), and be the main division contact for development and deployment of engineering competences.
- Establish and effectively manage project budgets and objectives. Includes developing, supporting and enforcing standardized project management requirements such as change control, training, construction management, scope development and buy-in with stakeholders on user requirements, justification, constraints and assumptions.
- Provide guidance and support for engineering regarding design concepts, specifications and requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing process in controls and automation.
- Project scope development and management
- Collaborate with the Finance team to track capex budget spend, cash flow projections, and productivity cost savings justification.
- Reputation of the team, i.e., how the project was achieved
- Feasibility and costing studies
- Capital spending plans development & support
- Responsible for understanding the manufacturing processes of the company and identifying areas where the cost/ benefit favors technology and automation.
- Effectiveness of team, build team, manage interpersonal opportunities
- Keeps abreast of best practices, and current or emerging manufacturing technologies to determine option and recommend improvements.
- Collaborate with the HSE (Health Safety Environmental) and Food Safety and Quality Teams to ensure products are manufactured to specifications and in compliance with Mars INC Safety and Food Safety Standards
- Execute communication processes that ensure appropriate level of communication of daily activities between all stakeholders.
- Collaborate with external project stakeholders to ensure priorities and standards have been reviewed and scope of work is aligned.
What You'll Bring To KIND
- 3-8 years’ experience in large CPG Contract Manufacturing (preferred)
- Knowledge of sourcing and procurement process and procedure
- Knowledge of Quality process and procedure
- Knowledge of Manufacturing process and procedure
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English
- Knowledge of safety circuits and risk assessments.
- Experience in a regulated or highly automated industry (e.g., automotive, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, semiconductor).
- Exposure to Industry 4.0 concepts, IIoT, or advanced analytics.
You have...
- Four-year degree in engineering core discipline is required. EE, ME or CE degree preferred.
- Minimum of a combination of 3 – 8 years of technical/production/engineering role preferably in consumer products manufacturing & packaging with a focus on automation and industrial controls.
- Ability to manage multiple work streams while delivering to target dates.
- ravel required up to 30% of the time dependent on project maturity/workload
- SAP system knowledge & experience helpful
- Leadership of capital projects > $10M (preferred)
- Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Electric).
- Effective relationship management - internal and external
- Experience with HMI/SCADA development tools (e.g., FactoryTalk, Ignition, Wonderware).
- Experienced with design, programming, and troubleshooting PLC, HMI, SCADA, and motion control systems.
- Familiarity with servo and motion control systems.
- Experienced with developing and implementing control strategies for automated equipment and processes.
- Proficient in interpreting electrical schematics and P&IDs
- Experience conducting system integration, testing, and commissioning of automation systems.
- Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to ensure systems control align with project requirements.
- Assist in root cause analysis and continuous improvement of control systems to enhance reliability and performance.
- Ensure all designs and implementations comply with applicable safety standards (e.g., NFPA, IEC, UL, CE).
- Manage mid-size projects or sub-projects, including cost estimation, scheduling, and vendor coordination.
- Strong understanding of industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Programming or scripting experience (Python, VBA, etc.) is a plus.
Certain states and localities require employers to post a reasonable estimate of salary range. A reasonable estimate of the current base salary range for this position is
$108,000.00 - $145,000.00. Actual salary will be based on a variety of factors, including location, experience, skill set, performance, licensure and certification, and business needs. The range for this position in other geographic locations may differ.
