NOTICE OF CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION
Notice is hereby given that the Cuyahoga Falls Civil Service Commission
will administer an open-competitive Written Examination for the following position:
FIREFIGHTER / PARAMEDIC
CITY OF CUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO
DATE, TIME, & PLACE OF EXAMINATION: Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium (Cuyahoga-Hopewell Conference Room), 2345 4th St, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221. Registration begins at 5:30 P.M. The written examination will start promptly at 6:00 P.M. A valid driver’s license or state-issued ID must be presented for identification purposes on the evening of the examination.
EXAMINATION: The examination process consists of a written test followed by a physical agility examination, a polygraph test, and a psychological fitness evaluation. Candidates who successfully pass all procedures and portions of the examination may be eligible for an interview. The successful candidate(s) shall be required to undergo a comprehensive medical exam that includes drug, marijuana, nicotine, and alcohol testing.
NO REVIEW WILL BE GRANTED FOR THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION.
EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit will be added to a
score of at least 75% of the attainable score in entrance examinations for:
- 20% extra credit for an applicant who has completed service in the uniformed services, has been honorably discharged or has transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, or is a member of the National Guard or a reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States who, at the time of the examination, has completed more than 180 days of active duty service under an executive order of the president of the United States or an act of the Congress of the United States; OR,
- 15% extra credit for any applicant who is a member in good standing of a reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States, including the National Guard.
- 10% extra credit for possessing a Firefighter II Ohio Certification.
- 5% extra credit for possessing a Paramedic Certification (Ohio or National Registry).
- 5% extra credit will be given to an applicant who has obtained an Associate’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, or higher from an accredited college or University
- 5% extra credit for completing the Cuyahoga Falls FORGE Program.
Copy of Form DD-214 (proof of honorable discharge) or certificate of service, Firefighter II, Paramedic Certification, diplomas, and certificates MUST be uploaded and submitted with the application to be eligible for extra credit.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
JOB SUMMARY: Under the general direction of Chief Officers, Battalion Chief, and/or Lieutenants, protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical assistance, rescue, fire prevention, and education. Performs specialized duties in the delivery of emergency medical, fire, and rescue services. The work involves performing first aid, basic and advanced life support measures, fire prevention, public education, firefighting, water rescue, hazardous materials response, high-angle and confined space rescue, code enforcement, training, property, building and equipment maintenance, staff functions, and other miscellaneous duties.
WORK HOURS: Candidates shall be assigned to a 24-hour or an 8-hour shift at the discretion of the Chief.
PAY RANGE: $67,399.90 - $99.942.93
Qualifications
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Applicant must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent by the date of exam (required for EMT / Paramedic certification).
- Must be 18 years or older at the time of employment.
- No person shall be eligible to receive an original appointment on and after the person's 41st birthday.
- Must have no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories.
- Must be a citizen of the United States of America.
- Must be able to read and write the English language and be of good moral character and temperate, and industrious habits.
Requirements
- Applicant must certify that he/she currently does not use tobacco products and, if hired, must refrain from using all tobacco products for the duration of employment with the City of Cuyahoga Falls.
- Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license without a record of suspension or revocation in any State and have the ability to maintain continuing eligibility under the City’s driver eligibility standards.
- All appointees shall obtain/maintain State of Ohio EMT and Paramedic certifications at no expense to the City of Cuyahoga Falls. Must attain and maintain fire certification as required by the State of Ohio.
In compliance with Federal law, Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, is required to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment in the United States. Applicants must be prepared to present the required documents within three days of being hired.
