NSF FORENSIC ENGINEERING
Forensic Engineer — Contract Position
Texas-Based | Regional & Multi-State Projects | Civil / Structural Focus
ABOUT NSF FORENSIC ENGINEERING
NSF is a growing forensic engineering consultancy delivering high-integrity investigative services across Texas and surrounding states. We work with law firms, insurance professionals, and property owners to determine the cause and origin of structural failures, weather-related damages, and construction defects.
NSF operates out of a private ranch in Flower Mound, Texas. We are not a downtown firm and we don't pretend to be. If that sounds like your kind of place, we'd like to meet you.
A NOTE ON THE FUTURE OF ENGINEERING WORK
"The engineers being displaced by AI are the ones doing work a computer can replicate. What we do requires a licensed professional on a rooftop making a judgment call that holds up in court. AI can't stamp a report. AI can't testify. This work isn't going anywhere."
While AI-assisted tools are compressing production roles across civil and structural firms — automated calculations, generative design, code compliance review — forensic investigation is structurally insulated. Every loss site is unique. Physical presence is non-negotiable. Causation requires trained judgment. And liability follows a PE, not an algorithm.
This is one of the few engineering roles where experience, instinct, and professional accountability still can't be automated away.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are expanding our core team and seeking two licensed engineers ready to trade the cubicle for the field. You will work directly with the firm's founder and principal, investigating storm and weather-related property damage across the region. For the right engineer, there is a clear path toward leadership as NSF scales.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Investigate and document the cause and origin of property damage following storms, natural disasters, fires, explosions, and construction or design defects
- Assess the scope and extent of structural damage and prepare defensible repair recommendations
- Produce clear, high-quality written reports communicating findings to attorneys, adjusters, and laypersons
- Provide expert testimony and litigation support when required
- Travel to project sites across Texas and surrounding states — most projects are single-day, with occasional overnight travel
- Pursue multi-state PE licensure as the firm grows — all licensing fees covered by NSF
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Texas — required; multi-state licensure is a strong plus
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- 2–10 years of structural or civil engineering experience; forensic background a plus but not required
- Comfort working at height — residential and commercial roof inspections are routine
- Strong technical writing skills — clear, defensible reports are the core deliverable
- Self-directed work ethic with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
- Familiarity with ASCE 7, IBC/ICC codes, and wind/hail damage standards is highly valued
E.I.T.s will be considered for candidates with the right background and drive.
WHY NSF
- Fieldwork over desk work — no billable hour pressure, no repetitive production projects
- A role that is genuinely AI-resistant — your judgment, license, and presence are the product
- Variety — no two investigations are the same
- Autonomy — manage your own schedule and caseload
- Competitive contract rates that reflect the value of your expertise
- Direct access to firm leadership and a genuine role in shaping company culture
- Multi-state licensing paid for by the firm
- Vertical growth opportunities for engineers who perform and want to lead
LOCATION AND TRAVEL
Primary demand is across Texas with regular work in Louisiana and periodic national assignments. NSF is currently licensed in six states. Most engagements are single-day inspections; some involve regional flights or overnight stays. All interviews are conducted directly with the firm's founder and principal.
