Job Description
The Contract Unconventional Completions Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, execution support, and optimization of completion programs for unconventional wells. This role provides technical leadership to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of wells while meeting subsurface objectives. The position works closely with multidisciplinary teams and external partners to support multi-well development programs, improve performance, and drive continuous operational enhancements.
ResponsibilitiesCompletions Design & Planning
- Develop and review detailed completion designs and programs for unconventional wells
- Optimize designs for cost, performance, and operational risk
- Ensure alignment with geological and reservoir objectives
Execution Support & Surveillance
- Provide real-time engineering support during completion operations
- Monitor field execution, identify risks, and recommend corrective actions
- Support troubleshooting efforts to minimize non-productive time and improve efficiency
Cost Management & Economic Analysis
- Prepare cost estimates and perform economic evaluations for completion programs
- Track and steward well costs throughout the project lifecycle
- Support post-job cost reconciliation and performance reporting
Technical Evaluation & Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate and implement new technologies, tools, and methodologies
- Perform engineering analysis and modeling to support design and execution decisions
- Lead or support investigations into operational inefficiencies and equipment failures
- Capture lessons learned and drive continuous improvement initiatives
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with drilling, subsurface, reservoir, and production teams to ensure integrated planning and execution
- Coordinate with operations teams to support scheduling, readiness, and field execution
- Interface with contractors and service providers to ensure performance and alignment with objectives
Procurement & Contractor Management
- Prepare and evaluate technical bid packages
- Support tendering, contracting, and procurement processes
- Monitor contractor performance and provide feedback based on key performance indicators
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all operations comply with regulatory requirements and industry standards
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure engineering designs incorporate safety considerations
- Participate in pre-job planning, safety reviews, and post-job evaluations
Leadership & Mentorship
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers
- Support knowledge sharing and development within the engineering team
Skills
- Extensive knowledge of unconventional completions design, equipment, and operations
- Strong understanding of hydraulic fracturing, wellbore equipment, and completion systems
- Experience with engineering modeling and analysis tools (e.g., hydraulics, torque and drag)
- Ability to analyze complex data and make sound technical and economic decisions
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities
- Effective communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-demand environment
- Strong organizational and project management skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical discipline
- 10+ years of relevant experience in completions engineering, preferably in unconventional operations
- Demonstrated experience in planning and executing completion programs
- Knowledge of industry standards, specifications, and best practices
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and external service providers
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and standard engineering software
- Strong commitment to safety, operational excellence, and continuous improvement
- Fluency in English for technical and professional communication
Job Details
Pay: $114.12/hr (1099), $102.82/hr (W2)
Location: Houston, TX
Schedule: Monday-Friday
