The Opportunity
We’re looking for an R&D Electrical Engineer to support our Grid Components team within Electrification Distribution Solutions. This role is focused on developing next-generation medium-voltage instrument transformers and sensors, contributing to both new product innovation and ongoing product improvements.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead development of new medium-voltage products, including concept design, simulation, testing, and validation
- Perform numerical analysis (dielectric, electromagnetic, structural, thermal, CFD) to support product design
- Create and maintain detailed 2D drawings, 3D models, and technical documentation to support manufacturing and quality standards
- Partner cross-functionally with manufacturing, sourcing, global engineering, and systems teams throughout development and industrialization
- Participate in and help drive design reviews for components and assemblies
- Support lab testing, troubleshooting, and product characterization efforts
- Ensure compliance with safety, reliability, and manufacturing efficiency standards
- Contribute to intellectual property development in alignment with ABB guidelines
- Travel up to 10–15% (domestic and international)
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s (4+ years) or Master’s (2+ years) in Electrical Engineering
- Experience in medium- or high-voltage product development
- Strong knowledge of FEM-based simulations (electromagnetic, thermal, structural, dielectric, CFD)
- Understanding of electrotechnical materials and their applications
- Experience with electrical testing and troubleshooting
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD tools (3D modeling & 2D drawings)
- Experience with product industrialization processes is a plus
- Background in medium- or high-voltage power network devices preferred
