Nature of Work
Under general supervision performs supervisory and administrative law enforcement work of moderate difficulty; performs related work as required.
Typical Duties
(Illustrative only)
- Supervises, assigns, inspects, and evaluates officers in their duties;
- respond to and supervise potentially life-threatening and hazardous situations;
- recommends personnel actions and administers employee disciplinary process;
- imparts information and orders to officers through briefings and meetings;
- supervises activities of volunteer and civilian personnel in their assignments;
- supervises and provides training of officers including FTO and in-service programs;
- reviews, prepares and disseminates departmental reports;
- supervises the service of various civil and criminal court orders;
- supervises the investigation of criminal cases to include processing of crime scenes;
- supervises officers assigned to multi agency task forces;
- register and maintain sex offender and other confidential files;
- prepares shift schedules to insure adequate staffing of a squad within a division;
- supervises maintenance and proper use of specialized and technical equipment;
- assumes administrative command responsibilities of a division in the absence of the Lieutenant;
- responds to and manages citizen complaints regarding law enforcement services and programs.
Essential functions of this position include: driving; standing, walking, sitting; crouching; stooping; kneeling; reaching; bending; lifting; carrying; pushing/pulling; working alone; working with and around others; dealing with interruptions; repetitive motion (hand, wrist, elbow & shoulder) for writing, typing, driving, using telephone, weapons qualifications, etc.; vision acuity (near & far) to be able to clearly analyze a scene and respond accordingly; color vision for driving, writing, weapons qualifications; hearing and speech (ordinary conversation) for communicating with staff and citizens; touch (finger dexterity) for driving, responding in darkness, handling duty weapons, and other types of equipment. Environmental conditions include working with mechanical equipment and hazards that are inherent to the job of responding to emergencies and dealing with individuals with weapons, drug/alcohol and domestic violence situations etc.
Minimum Qualifications
Three years of related law enforcement experience as a certified Peace Officer. Successful completion of background check and polygraph examination. Must be certified by AZPOST or obtain certification within 60 days of hire. Must obtain an Arizona driver’s license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
This position is non-exempt from overtime.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Considerable knowledge of:
- law enforcement principles, practices, techniques and equipment;
- principles and practices of leadership, training and supervision.
Working Knowledge Of
- law enforcement administration/organization, services, investigative activities, the methods and techniques of interrogation and major crime scene management;
- federal, state and local laws and regulations, and policies;
- County geography;
- search and rescue procedures;
- the practical use of social sciences as they relate to public safety and law enforcement.
Skill In
- detailed information recording;
- obtaining valid information via interviews/interrogations;
- the care and use of firearms, motor vehicles and technical equipment.
Ability To
- react quickly and calmly in emergency situations;
- exercise discretion, compassion and courtesy in managing situations firmly and impartially;
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public;
- follow written and verbal instruction;
- communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
