The Deputy City Engineer is a key leadership role within the City of Madera’s Engineering Department, responsible for managing a division that delivers high quality civil engineering, design, construction, and inspection services. Working under the general direction of the City Engineer, this position oversees professional and technical staff while ensuring safe work practices, regulatory compliance, and strong engineering standards across all assigned projects.
The role leads complex public infrastructure initiatives and private development project proposals from application through construction—including streets, storm drainage, sanitary sewer systems, parks and irrigation systems, water production and distribution facilities, and City buildings—while ensuring all projects accurate and conform with City standards. The Deputy City Engineer is involved in every phase of project delivery, from planning and design to cost estimating, contract administration, and field inspection. As a technical expert, the position provides guidance to staff, contractors, consultants, and community stakeholders, ensuring project quality and successful outcomes.
In addition to engineering oversight, the Deputy City Engineer plays a critical administrative and strategic role, preparing technical reports, budget recommendations, policies, and presentations for the City Administrator, City Council, and public groups. The position requires strong leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to foster effective working relationships throughout the organization and community— supporting the City’s commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable public infrastructure.
- A Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
- At least four (4) years of increasingly responsible full time Civil Engineering work experience, including two (2) years full time in a supervisory role
- Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid class C California driver's license

Examination scores determine standing on Civil Service eligibility lists. The City Manager, upon recommendation of the department head, will make the final selection and appointment from the established eligibility list.
