The Southern Appalachia Labor School's mission is to provide education, research, and linkages for working class and disenfranchised people in order to promote understanding, empowerment, and change. SALS is committed to developing a real comprehension of the social economic and legal structure which affects the lives of Appalachian people. The Southern Appalachian Labor School will provide free lunches and books to children under the age of 18. Any child will be eligible. The Southern Appalachian School is committed to helping low-income families, veterans, disabled, elderly individuals, and those affected by natural disasters with home repairs with the focus on health and safety.
Member Duties : The Southern Appalachian Labor School VISTAs will serve rural communities in Fayette County, WV. The VISTAs will coordinate activities to help low-income families with food, clothing, health and home repairs. Identify homes of low-income families and work with the housing manager and construction manager at SALS to qualify the families for grants to get home repairs. The VISTA will coordinate with the supervisor of the Feed and Read program for children under 18.
