Assistant Project Manager - Commercial Construction
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position supports the successful planning, coordination, and execution of commercial construction projects. This is an entry-level position designed for individuals with a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management (or related field) who are looking to build a career in construction management.
The APM works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, subcontractors, and clients to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in alignment with Fowler & Hammer’s standards for quality and safety. Fowler & Hammer’s portfolio of commercial construction projects includes healthcare, industrial, education (K-12 and higher education), and municipalities. This position is based in the office in La Crosse, WI. Job sites are typically within 90 miles of La Crosse, WI.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Project Coordination
- Assist Project Managers with day-to-day project administration
- Support project start-up, including document setup and organization
- Maintain project logs (submittals, RFIs, change orders, etc.) and follow up on outstanding items
Submittals & RFIs
- Manage the submittal process from receipt and review through approval
- Prepare and track Requests for Information (RFIs)
- Distribute responses to appropriate team members
Financial Support
- Assist with budget tracking and cost control
- Help review subcontractor pay applications
- Track change orders and assist in pricing documentation
Scheduling & Planning
- Assist in developing and updating project schedules
- Coordinate with field staff and subcontractors on timelines
- Help identify potential delays and communicate proactively
Communication
- Serve as a point of contact for subcontractors and vendors
- Support internal communication between field and office teams
- Assist with meeting coordination, agendas, and meeting minutes
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and organized project files (digital and physical)
- Ensure compliance with contract documents and specifications
- Support closeout process including O&M manuals and warranties
Administrative duties and any other job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Effective written and verbal communication
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Current driver's license and authorized to work in the United States
Preferred
- Internship or experience in commercial construction
- Familiarity with Bluebeam, Autodesk, and/or other similar industry software
- Basic understanding of construction documents
