Betty Shabazz International Charter School (BSICS) is seeking to hire Part-Time School Kitchen Aides.
ABOUT BETTY SHABAZZ INTERNATIONAL CHARTER SCHOOL:
Established in 1998, BSICS is a school comprised of two K-8 Chicago elementary campuses. Our Betty Shabazz Academy campus is located at 7823 S. Ellis Ave in Chatham. Our Barbara A. Sizemore Academy campus is located at 6547 S. Stewart Ave in Englewood.

POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Kitchen Aides support the School Food Service Department. The position requires versatility as the Kitchen Aide plays an important role in meal preparation, food service, kitchen cleaning and sanitation, and inventory tracking and reporting.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Degree or G.E.D. equivalent
Non-Restaurant Food Handler Certification
Preferred - Two years of food service experience working in a cafeteria at a university or K-12 school

Ability to operate equipment used in industrial maintenance including electrical clearing equipment, common tools, etc

Ability to take initiative, work independently, meet deadlines, follow directions, and adapt to changing demands, activities, and workloads
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operations
Essential Functions:
1. Sets up serving tables
2. Cleans and sanitizes steam table
3. Places water in pans on the steam table
4. Assists in the preparation and serving of well-prepared, age-appropriate meals and snacks (which will include purees and special diets.)
5. Assists with the daily prep of bread, fruit, salad, etc.
6. Breaks down of table; cleans the steam table
7. Assists the Chef and Sous-chef with food preparation as requested
8. Assists the Chef and Sous-chef in properly labeling, covering, and storing unused food after each meal
9. Assists the Chef and Sous-chef in cleaning food preparation areas and equipment.
10. Assists the Chef and Sous-chef as requested in inventorying and stocking food products and supplies
11. Washes dishes after lunch & general cleaning of kitchen
12. Receives, sorts, and stores food and/or supply deliveries
13. Serves students, staff, and guests daily
14. Assists Chef and Sous-chef with safety and healthy food preparation
15. Adheres to safe and healthy food handling practices at all times
16. Assists in keeping the kitchen free of health and safety hazards; reports and eliminates them when appropriate to prevent injury and the spread of illness
17. Maintains a clean and sanitary workstation at all times, including but not limited to; work areas, storage areas, equipment, supplies, cooking, and eating utensils.
18. Assists in the preparation of well-balanced meals and snacks that meet the Nutrition Program guidelines
19. Assists in keeping records of amounts of food prepared and numbers of individuals served
20. Performs various cooking tasks necessary for preparing meals
21. Assists in keeping accurate and current food supply inventory (including “disaster food and substitute meals)
22. Assists in preparation, completion, and filing of required National School Lunch Program paperwork
23. Performs weekly cleaning of all bins and their contents, stoves and drip pans, inside all coolers, all kitchen walls and sprays all stainless steel appliances with stainless steel spray
24. Performs vacation cleaning thoroughly: all appliances, walk-in preparation area, pantry and walls, office, kitchen, pantry, and all storage areas
25. Performs additional other duties as assigned

1. Assumes responsibility for own professional development; for keeping current with the literature, new research findings, and improved techniques in specialized areas; keeping abreast of any changes in federal and state law as it relates to operations; and for attending appropriate professional meetings
2. Attends all required professional development which includes all training modules approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) as well as safe food handling principles
3. Reflects objectively in terms of their leadership, performance, and professional growth
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is generally performed indoors in a climate-controlled environment. Physical exertion is present due to frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, walking, sitting, twisting, or standing for prolonged periods of time. Must carry/lift/push or pull loads of up to 50 - 70 lbs. Bending at the waist; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate food preparation and/or cooking equipment and utensils. The employee frequently meets with multiple demands from various groups of people.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is required to regularly interact with the students, staff, and the public.

20 or more hours a week
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:
Performance evaluated by a direct supervisor in accordance with a Board of Directors approved policy on Evaluation of Administrative Employees.
