The Senior Estimator at Fiore & Sons is thorough, meticulous, and curious while also being a great leader and communicator. The Senior Estimator is responsible for preparing various Heavy Civil Construction estimates while also supporting the Estimating team and the business development and marketing efforts of the Company. The Senior Estimator has a high-level understanding of Heavy Civil Construction and has the ability to comprehend and speak to complex construction plans, perform job walk-throughs, and provide input to Executive Leadership while also building solid, mutually beneficial relationships with clients.
COMPENSATION
$119,300.00 to $226,100.00 annually dependent on experience, skills, and level of hire
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coaches, trains, and mentors staff to maximize departmental efficiencies while maintaining a professional and positive working environment. Evaluates staff objectively in a timely manner and addresses challenges in a manner that fosters team relations and cooperation.
- Leverages curiosity, customer service, expertise, and innovation to understand the ins and outs of proposal requests by reviewing construction documents and drawings, scope of work, job walks, and discussions with the client.
- Builds and maintains strong relationships with customers throughout the bidding process and ensures the development of long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with clients.
- Prepares estimates on large and complex projects by calculating a complete quantity takeoff of the scope of work, and assures estimates are accurate and in line with customer needs, expected unit cost history, and profit margins.
- Manages all aspects of the bidding process on estimates.
- Initiates communication with clients for prospective new work and understands projects that will best fit with company workload needs.
- Reviews specifications, soil reports, and plans upon receipt of invitation to bid and communicates findings with Executive Leadership and other stakeholders.
- Performs full site review, evaluation, and analysis and provides documentation and feedback to Executive Leadership and other stakeholders.
- Reviews team member bids for accuracy, completeness, and constructability and provides effective feedback and coaching on bids.
- Conducts weekly one-on-one meetings with direct reports.
- Collaborates with Project Management team upon project award in order to allocate a Project Manager to job and maintains an open line of communication to discuss all relevant issues in a timely manner.
- Compiles all hand-off data, schedules and facilitates hand-off meeting with Project Management.
- Prepares detailed proposal specifications and schedule, and coordinates concept drawings that accurately portray the scope of work and requirements of the project for presentation to the owner.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships with all involved parties, such as Owners, Architects, Fiore personnel, and subcontractors to create a supportive and communicative environment.
- Utilizes extensive knowledge of market trends to assist in the development and implementation of marketing plans, provides input into the development of marketing materials, and assists in sourcing new clients.
- Uses knowledge, strong attention to detail and follow-up skills to solicit quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, and organizes, reviews, and completes detailed scopes of work and cost comparisons for each.
- Supports Estimating Director in hiring candidates whose skills, aptitude, and attitude are appropriate for the work being performed and who operate within Company, State, and Federal policies and procedures.
- Assesses problem situations to identify causes, gathers and processes relevant information, generates possible solutions, and makes recommendations and/or resolves the problem
- Effectively prioritizes projects, needs, and work requests.
- Maintains files of documents as back-up for estimate figures, including current (accurate) information on unit prices from suppliers.
- Demonstrates solid team leadership and acts with integrity and in a manner that shows support for the company, its values, and its employees, while maintaining constant focus on meeting and exceeding customer requirements and expectations.
- Exhibits ongoing commitment to quality by evaluating project-related processes and making necessary changes, using customer input to make improvements, and meeting/exceeding internal and external customer expectations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Significant knowledge of estimating techniques, regulatory compliance, cost control, and material pricing within all disciplines of Heavy Civil Construction.
- High level organization, planning, prioritization, coordination, and the general ability to manage several moving parts, with a big picture perspective of business and thorough understanding of profit and loss, including:
- Ability to multi-task, coordinate, delegate, and supervise activities and staff.
- Understanding of budget project principles.
- Ability to work effectively while under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Big picture understanding of business, profit and loss, crucial prioritization, and high-level decision-making and an understanding of materials markets with the ability to track and project market changes to drive purchasing decisions.

- Ability to do moderate math equations, understand financial concepts, and interpret computerized cost data and systems, engineering drawings, purchase orders, contracts, and other construction documents.

- Proficiency using Word, Excel, Outlook and Microsoft Project.
- Ability to multitask and effectively prioritize work requests.
- Knowledge of B2W Estimate and AGTEK software.
- Preferred:
- 8+ years’ experience in an estimating role with projects that include at least some of the following: Sitework and Finish Grading; Demolition & Environmental; Site Utilities; Overlot Grading; Trucking; and/or Recycling.
- BS degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related field or CCP / CEP Certification in lieu of degree.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Estimators spend a lot of time in an office environment, sitting and standing for extended periods of time and pushing/pulling/lifting boxes and items 25-30 pounds. Estimators must also continually visit clients and construction sites, including the ability to walk for extended periods on uneven ground, climb ladders, and maneuver obstacles.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Indoor and outdoor work, including changing office temperatures, and exposure to variant weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, etc.) and muddy ground conditions.
