Director of Line Haul Operations
The Director of Fleet Operations is responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of the company’s fleet across the network. This role ensures fleet availability, safety, compliance, and cost efficiency while supporting high-volume, time-sensitive delivery operations. The Director partners closely with Operations, Safety, Finance, and Vendor Management to scale the fleet in alignment with business growth and service commitments.
Location: Olive Branch, MS or Memphis TN
Pay Scale: $124K to $140K
Hours: 40 standard, however additional hours will be necessary based on customer needs.
Job Responsibilities:
Fleet Strategy & Ownership
- Own the end-to-end fleet strategy for delivery operations.
- Develop short- and long-term fleet plans to support network growth, peak volume, and new market launches.
- Establish fleet standards across vehicle type, branding, telematics, and maintenance programs.
- Negotiate contracts and partnerships with suppliers and service providers to secure favorable terms and drive value for the organization
Vehicle Lifecycle Management
- Oversee vehicle acquisition, leasing, disposition, and replacement strategies.
- Manage relationships with OEMs, leasing partners, upfitters, and maintenance vendors.
- Ensure optimal vehicle utilization and minimize downtime across the network.
Maintenance & Reliability
- Establish preventive maintenance programs and performance standards.
- Monitor maintenance compliance, repair costs, and vehicle uptime.
- Implement processes to reduce road failures, breakdowns, and service disruptions.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and state/local regulations.
- Control accident management, claims coordination, and corrective action plans.
- Champion a culture of compliance within the line haul operations team, implementing rigorous protocols to mitigate risks and uphold legal obligations.
Financial Management
- Own fleet budgets including CapEx, OpEx, fuel, maintenance, and leasing costs.
- Analyze fleet cost drivers and implement cost-reduction initiatives.
- Partner with Finance on forecasting, budgeting, and ROI analysis.
Performance & Reporting
- Define and track key fleet KPIs including cost per mile, utilization, downtime, accident rates, and PM compliance.
- Deliver regular reporting and insights to executive leadership.
- Use data and analytics to drive continuous improvement.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Support hub launches and expansions with fleet readiness and planning.
- Lead, develop, and scale fleet operations teams.
- Drive innovation initiatives and leverage technologies that enhance line haul operational efficiency.
Qualifications:
- 8–10+ years of fleet or transportation operations experience, preferably in line haul delivery or logistics
- 5+ years in a senior leadership or director-level role
- Deep knowledge of fleet compliance, safety, and maintenance best practices
- Proven experience managing large, multi-site vehicle fleets
- Experience with electric vehicle (EV) or alternative fuel fleets
- Familiarity with telematics, fleet management systems, and maintenance platforms
- Bachelor’s degree in Operations, Transportation, Supply Chain, or related field (MBA a plus).
