Position Summary
The Manufacturing Engineer plays a key role in supporting and improving manufacturing operations within a Swiss machining environment. The position is hands-on, working closely with Manufacturing, Quality, and Leadership to solve daily production challenges, drive continuous improvement, and support customer projects from concept through production launch.
The Manufacturing Engineer designs and improves manufacturing processes, standardizes work, supports quality initiatives, and collaborates with external suppliers. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to balance quality, cost, and delivery in a fast-paced job-shop environment.
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Develops, reviews, and maintains work instructions to support standardized and repeatable manufacturing processes.
- Analyzes products and processes to improve quality, efficiency, and cost.
- Proactively identifies technical and process challenges and implements practical solutions.
- Serves as the technical point of contact for assigned customers and product families, acting as a liaison between engineering and production.
- Provides customer guidance on design concepts and specifications to optimize manufacturability using available equipment and processes.
- Defines manufacturing methods for new and existing products to meet customer requirements while balancing quality and cost.
- Reviews and improves technical drawings for manufacturability, applying dimensional analysis and GD&T best practices.
- Understands inspection and test requirements; identifies inspection risks and develops effective inspection strategies.
- Supports the Quality team in root cause analysis and corrective actions related to process and product issues.
- Defines requirements for outside processing and communicates with suppliers, including heat treatment, plating/coating, grinding, secondary machining, and specialty processes.
- Identifies and qualifies new suppliers and external processes to improve capability, quality, or cost.
- Evaluates new equipment and processing methods, including machining centers, automation, inspection equipment, and supporting tools.
- Applies project management principles to ensure tooling, fixtures, gauges, equipment, routings, and CNC/CMM programs are fully defined, documented, and implemented.
- Tracks open technical issues and drives projects to timely closure.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering with 2+ years of experience, or Associate’s degree with 3–5 years of relevant manufacturing experience.
- Experience in a precision machining or job-shop manufacturing environment (Swiss machining preferred).
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
- Strong ability to interpret complex technical drawings and understand design intent.
- Working knowledge of GD&T and dimensional analysis.
- Experience developing or supporting manufacturing inspection processes.
- Good understanding of materials, heat treating, and secondary processes.
- Demonstrated ability to support and collaborate with a production floor.
- Experience using ERP systems; Global Shop ERP experience is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with production, quality, suppliers, and customers.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with PLCs or equipment controllers is a plus but not required.
