About Sydor Technologies
Sydor Technologies is a U.S.-based engineering and manufacturing company headquartered in Fairport, NY. Founded in 2004 from technology developed at the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics, Sydor designs and builds precision measurement, diagnostics, and ballistic test systems used by defense, research, and industrial customers worldwide.
Our products are deployed in laboratories and test ranges where accuracy, reliability, and standards compliance are critical. Engineers at Sydor work closely with the full product lifecycle, from design and build through integration, testing, and customer support.
About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support the design, development, and testing of ballistic systems and instrumentation within our Ballistics Business Unit.
This is an individual contributor role focused on mechanical design, prototype build, system integration, and testing support. The work is practical and standards-driven, with direct involvement in real hardware and test environments. You will collaborate closely with engineering, operations, and customer-facing teams to ensure designs are robust, manufacturable, and meet performance and compliance requirements.
What You’ll Work On
- Mechanical design of components, fixtures, mounts, and test systems using SolidWorks
- Tolerance analysis, material selection, and design-for-manufacturing reviews
- Prototype builds, mechanical integration, and hands-on troubleshooting
- Support of ballistic and instrumentation testing, including integration of sensors, DAQ, velocity measurement, and high-speed imaging
- Research and application of applicable standards (NIJ, SAAMI, ISO, ASTM, NATO/STANAG, CIP)
- Creation of engineering drawings, manufacturing documentation, ECOs, and work instructions
- Technical support for customer projects, quotes, BOMs, and proposals
What We’re Looking For
- Strong mechanical design experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD tools
- Experience with tolerances, materials, machining, and fabrication
- Hands-on mechanical skills including assembly, testing, and troubleshooting
- Working knowledge of standards-driven engineering and technical documentation
- Ability to balance technical rigor with schedule and cost constraints
- Strong communication skills and comfort working cross-functionally
Nice to Have
- Experience with ballistic, gas-driven, shock-loaded, or other safety-critical systems
- Test and instrumentation integration experience (sensors, DAQ, high-speed imaging)
- Background in defense, aerospace, ruggedized systems, or advanced instrumentation
- Familiarity with ITAR/EAR-controlled environments
Additional Information
- Onsite role based in Fairport, NY
- Travel approximately once per quarter
- Ability to lift 40–50 lbs and work hands-on with equipment
- Must be eligible to work with export-controlled technology
