POSITION SUMMARY: This position meets the definition of Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician found in KRS 61.592 (1)(b) and is appropriate for Hazardous Duty status. This position is required to have met professional standards and possess Kentucky Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certifications. This position requires active fire suppression and requires the fitting use of a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) due to exposure to hazardous atmospheres. This position faces a degree of danger or peril associated with collapse of buildings, the exposure to flames, smoke or fumes, and/or the presence of twisted metal and debris in the immediate rescue environment. This position is exposed to infectious diseases or blood borne pathogens as a result of working in close physical contact with the general public. This position requires a high degree of physical conditioning in order to fight fires, lift and move injured persons or debris, and deal with the physical and mental stress associated with the duties of this position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: A Firefighter/EMT shall be able to operate all fire apparatus and ambulances and equipment carried on them to provide fire protection, and the care, treatment, and transportation for the sick, injured or incapacitated citizens of the city. Performs fire prevention inspections, conducts public fire and EMS safety education programs, performs preventive maintenance inspections on all equipment, performs the testing of all fire apparatus, hose, hydrants and other equipment within the department needing routine testing. Complete written and/or oral reports for the dissemination of information based on the above activities. Maintain certifications as a Kentucky Certified Career Firefighter and State Certification as an EMT. Participates in drills, demonstrations and courses in firefighting techniques, equipment, and apparatus operation, medical aid, technical rescue, hazardous materials, fire prevention, equipment maintenance and a wide variety of other subjects related to the fire and EMS service; studies city geography, streets and conditions affecting fire operations; studies and learns departmental standard operating procedures; studies and learns inspection regulations and fire prevention laws, codes and departmental policies and procedures; studies and learns procedures and techniques for the mitigation of hazardous materials incidents. Firefighters shall participate in the department’s fire education and community outreach programs and activities. Assist in the inspection of residential and commercial business occupancies; assist in performing follow-up procedures to ensure compliance to Fire Codes, National Electrical Code, and Kentucky Building Codes. Cleans, services and makes minor repairs to ensure the operational readiness of vehicles, apparatus, hoses, and emergency equipment; participates in cleaning, repair and upkeep of departmental buildings, grounds, and facilities.
