Boiler Operator must possess a current Massachusetts Department of Fire Services - Second Class Fireman’s License
Job Summary
The Billerica, MA Manufacturing Facility operates 5-7-days per week. Boiler Operators work any day of the week, including weekends. Work on weekends may be as overtime or as part of the Technician's normal schedule. Changes in business needs and production requirements can cause the plant to occasionally change the length of work shifts or the schedule. The hours of work vary from 8-10 or 12-16 hours per day. Shift rotations vary from working a single straight shift to working a rotating and/or staggered shifts. Boiler Operators are expected to be willing to rotate and to work any shift. Additional days could be required to be worked as overtime. This facility is a union shop with an active collective bargaining agreement with the United Steel Workers.
Under the direction of the chief engineer and/or designee the Boiler Operator is responsible for safely performing their assigned duties on shift including, but not limited to assisting in the preparation of all boilers, and equipment for inspection/repair, cleaning of boilers, tanks and boiler room cleaning, as well as make necessary repairs or replacement of boiler room equipment as directed.
Essential Functions
- Assist in the start-up and shutdown of the boilers and auxiliary equipment as directed.
- Test boiler watery chemistry and adjust doses to maintain limits within proper ranges.
- Make bihourly boiler room rounds to ensure the safe and efficient operation of boilers and equipment.
- Lubricate machinery and equipment as assigned.
- Keep the production supervisor informed of all operational and safety issues as observed while performing the operational duties.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Work in support of other departments as needed.
- Must observe and follow all safety rules and regulations including, but not limited to Confined Space Entry, Lockout/Tagout, Hot Work, etc., as well as be familiar with chemical safety and Materials Safety Data Sheets.
- Must be capable of utilizing steam plant related tools and equipment, as well as all computer related systems.
- Must utilize Personal Protective Equipment including, but not limited to safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, respiratory protection (dust masks, respirators, etc.), chemical splash aprons, Tyvek suits, etc.
- Responsible for maintenance of all related boiler room equipment.
- Performing preventive maintenance on facility equipment and production equipment as needed.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, Skills, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licenses)
- High school diploma or equivalent trades school certification, GED equivalent or combination of education and experience.
- Must possess a current Massachusetts Second Class Fireman’s License, per the union contract.
- Must possess ability to understand and execute written and oral instructions and relay instructions to follow-up shifts.
- Must be able to safely lift and carry up to fifty pounds. Must be able to bend, walk, stand, stoop, climb stairs and ladders and safely move materials and/or equipment.
Skills & Preferred Qualifications
- Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
- Must demonstrate strong communication skills including oral, written and electronic
- Ability to use good judgment to take independent action to carry out the primary functions of the job.
- Possession of a Massachusetts Grade 2 Industrial Wastewater Treatment License.
