PROJECT MANUFACTURING ENGINEER
Long Island City, NY
As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will be responsible for developing the manufacturing processes for a variety of automotive system components within SMP’s Vehicle Control Division. You will work closely with design and tooling engineers to ensure product quality and manufacturing standards are met. The position requires travel to our Mexico facility for project installation, training, and handoff at the manufacturing location.
Responsibilities include:
- Establish conceptual process layout with equipment & tooling requirements.
- Provide input to the Design Engineer to reduce tooling, equipment & manufacturing cost.
- Support supervisor in developing project plan, budget and schedule.
- Establish tooling and equipment specifications for purpose of quote & manufacture.
- Source and select vendors for tooling & equipment.
- Supply production department with tooling and equipment to reliably manufacture products to the design specifications and cost intent, per established timing plan.
- Work with design engineers to optimize designs during product development.
- Debug and complete acceptance trials on all tooling and equipment in Long Island City prior to pilot production in Mexico.
- Travel to SMP Mexico to install all tooling and equipment. Train factory representatives & assemblers in operation of all production equipment. Produce a pilot sample run of assemblies that meet all design specifications.
- Establish and track critical path timing plan from project approval to release to production.
- Provide production support regarding assembly problems, changes, and cost reduction.
- Handling other related functions as directed by supervisor.
To qualify, you must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, 3+ years of related product development experience and be proficient in using SOLIDWORKS. Knowledge of common manufacturing processes such as ultrasonic welding, heat stake assembly, resistance welding, laser welding, mechanical press and forming, magnetizing, CNC coil winding, soldering, dispensing is required. Experience with Automated assembly & test systems for measuring electrical parameters, fluid flow & mechanical displacement is a plus. Excellent oral/written communication, problem-solving, organizational, and PC skills are all essential. You must be able to travel to Mexico for up to two weeks at a time, if required.

The estimated salary range for this position is $90,000- $120,000.
