Summary
Performs a wide variety of technical tasks and functions in support of fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services, rescue, and hazardous materials operations; participates in fire prevention and safety programs; provides the community with both advanced and basic emergency care and performs other emergency operations in support of the Fire Department.
Essential Functions
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Respond to emergency calls; provide appropriate services as required including fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, and hazardous materials operations; prepare reports regarding emergency incidents as assigned.
- Maintain a state of readiness for emergency response; operate, inspect, repair, order and perform other technical tasks related to the apparatus and equipment in the Fire Department.
- Perform search and rescue for trapped or injured persons; provide necessary first aid, emergency medical services and life support as necessary, including CPR, IV, intubation, and immobilization.
- Operate numerous types of rescue, emergency and fire suppression equipment and apparatus as required for incidence response.
- Perform emergency medical duties as designated by state regulatory agencies to the level of Paramedic; stabilize and transport acutely ill or injured persons to medical facilities to receive advanced medical care; provide highest standard of stabilization, intervention and transport of the sick or injured; complete patient reports and other medical related documentation.
- Participate in cleaning and maintaining station facilities, grounds, equipment and apparatus; ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained at assigned station; ensure that all equipment and apparatus is in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls.
- Operate, inspect, repair and perform other technical tasks related to the apparatus and equipment in the Fire Department; check the Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) to ensure that it is fully operational; inspect and test all medical equipment and drugs for operation and quantity; check all fluids and pertinent equipment of designated apparatus for proper levels and full operation.
- Conduct a thorough check and test of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA); conduct daily check of apparatus and equipment; perform minor maintenance on apparatus and equipment.
- Participate in a variety of fire prevention operations, activities and programs including training, fire investigations, code enforcement and equipment operation and maintenance.
- Participate in activities and operations in response to natural disasters, major accidents, incidents involving hazardous materials, and other emergency situations; perform salvage and overhaul activities after fire.
- Complete periodic accurate reports regarding activities and functions of the department as assigned.
- Perform testing of fire hydrants and fire hoses; conduct residential fire safety inspections; perform pre-fire planning.
- Maintain constant training and education in all areas of fire suppression, prevention, emergency medical techniques, hazardous materials response, and other operations and activities of department; perform fire ground skills training; maintain and update records of street maps, closings, and construction.
- Perform advanced as well as basic life support on patients.
- Perform a variety of technical duties as assigned by command personnel.
- Perform public relations on behalf of the Fire Department including demonstration of fire equipment and apparatus, and participation in other educational programs for various groups and general public; may conduct tours of the station; may be required to instruct public fire prevention and fire safety.

Knowledge of:
- Operation, maintenance and uses of modern fire fighting apparatus and equipment.
- Operational characteristics, services and activities of comprehensive fire suppression and prevention programs.
- Procedures and techniques for provision of emergency medical and rescue services as required achieving certification as Paramedic in the State of Texas.
- International Fire and Building Codes.
- The geography of the city and surrounding area.
- Specialized communications equipment.
- Various building construction techniques and the consequence of each type on fire suppression and prevention activities.
- Safe work practices and procedures.
- Approved procedures and policies for hazardous or toxic materials storage, transport and clean up.
Required Abilities
- Work under stress and use good judgement in emergency situations.
- Tactfully respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
- Oversee and assist in resolving a variety of situations characterized by conflict or danger.
- Operate specialized emergency communications equipment.
- Safely operate department vehicles, apparatus and other emergency equipment, including air packs, oxygen equipment, 12 lead and 3 lead EKG, extrication tools and swift water rescue equipment.
- Prepare and operate department vehicles, apparatus and other emergency equipment.
- Prepare clear and concise reports.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Maintain mental capacity that permits making sound judgments regarding work
- Demonstrate intrinsic motivation, high ethical and moral standards
- Work a 48/96 hour shift and maintaining regular, reliable attendance
- Clear a post-offer medical physical examination, drug test, psychological, criminal background and other appropriate testing and requirements
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, And TRAINING
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the job is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education And/or Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required. Incumbents must successfully complete training required to attain certification as a firefighter in the State of Texas. Certification as a Paramedic in the State of Texas and one year of firefighting experience preferred.
License Or Certificate
- Possession of a valid Texas Class B exempt or higher driver's license from the State of Texas
- Possession of Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter Certification
- Possession of Texas Department of State Health Services Paramedic or Licensed Paramedic Certification
- Possession of Texas Commission on Fire Protection Hazardous Materials Technician Certification within one year of appointment
- Possession of Texas Commission on Fire Protection Driver/Operator Certification within two years of appointment
