Position Summary
The Village of Orwell is seeking part-time firefighters to fill multiple newly created positions within the department. A Part-Time Firefighter performs fire suppression, prevention, hazardous materials handling, and related emergency services under varying conditions. This position responds to alarms, provides emergency firefighting services, assists in fire suppression (including entry, rescue, ventilating, salvage, and overhaul), and supports fire inspections and investigations. Firefighters serve as community relations representatives, participate in public outreach, and perform related duties as assigned
Essential Job Responsibilities
· Respond to fire, rescue, and hazardous materials emergencies.
· Perform fire suppression tasks including: hoseline operations, rescue, forcible entry, ventilating, crawling, climbing ladders, and operating in extreme environments while wearing full PPE and SCBA.
· Conduct search and rescue operations, including carrying or dragging victims to safety in hazardous and low-visibility environments.
· Advance water-filled hose lines, negotiate stairs, ladders, and obstacles, and operate from heights or in enclosed spaces.
· Operate fire apparatus and emergency vehicles with lights and sirens in compliance with state law and department policies.
· Assist with fire prevention activities, building inspections, and re-inspections.
· Maintain equipment, apparatus, facilities, and department readiness.
· Participate in training, skills maintenance, and physical fitness activities.
· Serve as a positive representative at community events and outreach activities.
· Complete reports, maintain records, and communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
· High School diploma or GED; two (2) years of related experience and/or training preferred.
· Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.
· Valid Ohio Firefighter I certification required; Firefighter II preferred.
· Valid Ohio driver’s license with a good driving record (no major violations or more than 6 points).
· Must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to work in the United States.
· Must be willing to obtain Ohio Fire Safety Inspector Certification within two (2) years of appointment.
· HAZMAT training required; Incident Command and Emergency Vehicle Driving training required.
· Ability to read and interpret safety rules, regulations, technical procedures, and professional publications.
· Basic mathematical and problem-solving ability.
· Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and behaviors and correct them appropriately.
· Knowledge of Ohio and local fire prevention laws.
· Computer literacy for inputting, retrieving, and reporting department data.
