What We Do
The Beverly Hills Fire Department is charged with the preservation of life and property within the Beverly Hills community. The dedicated men and women of the Beverly Hills Fire Department protect approximately 34,000 residents and an estimated 150,000-200,000 daily visitors in a 5.7 square mile area. Highly-trained and properly equipped firefighters respond to fires, rescues, medical emergencies, chemical releases, and natural disasters. The Beverly Hills Fire Department operates the city's three fire stations and responds to over 7,000 incidents per year. The Fire Department’s reputation for exemplary service is underscored by its Class I rating from the Insurance Services Office, an elite distinction carried by only a few fire departments in the nation.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have paid professional experience in the fire service and at least 18 college units, but preferably a Bachelor's Degree. Candidates that meet all of the Minimum Qualifications are encouraged to submit an application for review though candidates who possess beyond the required minimum qualifications are preferred. The ideal candidate should possess exceptional customer service skills and be responsive and proactive when addressing the needs of the community. Candidates for this position must possess a strong commitment to public service, the ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion and act with integrity. Position & Benefits
This position is represented by the Firefighters' Association and is covered by the negotiated terms and conditions of that Association's Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The City provides a generous compensation and benefits package, including CalPERS retirement 3% @ 55 for classic members and 2.7% @ 57 for new members; $2,099.01/month towards health insurance (with option of up to $475/month as taxable cash); a monthly contribution of $275 to an RHS account for retiree medical savings; generous vacation accruals with the option for annual cash-outs. FCTC Eligibility
The city of Beverly Hills will be utilizing the Fire Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List (SEL) for this recruitment. While the City of Beverly Hills accepts either a CPAT or Biddle Certificate to meet the minimum requirements for this position, the FCTC requires a CPAT Certificate in order to be placed on the FCTC SEL. Candidates must be on the FCTC SEL by the end of the application period on Sunday, December 21, 2025. For Lateral Applicants
Per the City of Beverly Hills' Personnel Rules and Regulations, the FCTC Written Test and Eligibility requirement may be waived for applicants who meet the following criteria: Must have 2 or more years of experience as a Firefighter in a state , county, or municipal department. Must be a certified paramedic in Los Angeles County.
Background Investigation
As part of the selection process, all eligible candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation. The background investigation will include a comprehensive investigation of the candidate's background which includes, Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background check, education and employment history (including a credit, criminal and DMV review), personal statement, polygraph examination, employment and personal reference check.
Additionally, all eligible candidates will undergo a psychological examination and medical examination (including a drug screen).

- Responds to all types of rescue, fire suppression, medical and non-medical emergency calls and implements action required to save lives and property.
- Participates in continuing study, training and drill activity to achieve and maintain required skills to include regular fitness program to maintain good health and physical strength.
- Maintains fire equipment, ambulance, apparatus, hydrants, quarters and grounds to include performing motor tests on apparatus when assigned as a Fire Engineer.
- Prepares and maintains various departmental reports and forms and operates departmental computer.
- Provides life support, CPR and first aid and assists paramedics when necessary.
- Shops for and prepares meals.
- Operates the tiller steering wheel on the fire truck when responding to emergency calls.
- Performs hazardous material containment practices.
- Ventilates burning buildings to carry off hazardous smoke and gases.
- Performs fire and arson investigation to include examining fire scene and determining origin or cause of fire.
- Performs fire prevention inspections and tests to assure compliance with state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
- Conducts public education and information classes to include performing public appearances and conducting fire station tours.
- Senior firefighters may supervise junior firefighters during high rise firefighting operations and hazardous material containment.
- May serve as alarm operator (dispatcher) or drive ambulance when necessary.
- May serve as Captain or Engineer in their absence.
- Performs other related work as required.

California Applicants

- California Firefighter academy graduation certificate holder within five years of application date. For academy graduates that do not possess a California State Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certification, the California State Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certification must be obtained within 12 months from time of appointment. The Fire Chief has discretion on providing a time extension.

- California State Certified Firefighter 1
OR
- Currently employed as a full-time firefighter with a minimum of two years of experience. For individuals that do not possess a California State Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certification, the California State Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certification must be obtained within 12 months from time of appointment. Out Of State Applicant Or Department Of Defense
- Full-Time Professional Firefighter with a minimum of six months experience, post-training academy at the time of application date.
AND
- An IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited state or Department of Defense certification that includes Fire Fighter 1 and Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations. IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited certification for Wildland Fire Fighter 1 not required, but desirable. For out-of-state applicants that do not possess a California State Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certification, the California State Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certification must be obtained within 12 months from time of appointment. The Fire Chief has discretion on providing a time extension.
