SUMMARY
UtilityPower is seeking motivated individuals to join our Storm Group as Damage Assessors/Scouts to perform visual inspections of electrical distribution lines and address trouble tickets. Assessors will inspect distribution lines from substations to individual customers or businesses, identifying damage and accurately reporting back to clients. This includes determining crew type needs, access availability, and any special equipment required.
Applicants should possess a working knowledge of the major components of electrical distribution infrastructure to ensure accurate identification and safety during inspections. The position requires familiarity with both paper feeder maps and digital applications to navigate assigned areas.
This is a temporary, seasonal, and weather-dependent position requiring travel within the United States. Travel may involve using your personal or a rental vehicle. Assessors will be placed on a storm roster and contacted when weather-related events occur. Assignments may last from one day to several weeks, depending on the extent of damage.
Assessor Job Duties
- Conduct thorough assessments of distribution lines to identify safety concerns and system damage.
- Document and report findings in the format designated by the client.
- Ensure safety at all times, for yourself, your team, and others in the field.
- Work extended hours, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, in all weather conditions and terrain types.
- Read and interpret paper feeder maps, understanding electrical equipment legends and symbols.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with team leads, storm managers, utility client workers, and customers in the field.
- Determine the need for vegetation crews, debris removal, access options for work crews, and any special equipment required.
- Maintain personal and team safety gear, ensuring readiness and proper use.
Job Requirements
- Firsthand experience with electrical distribution systems.
- Clear understanding of electrical lines and equipment versus fiber optics and communication lines.
- Familiarity with safety protocols and procedures.
- Willingness to respond promptly to assignments, including short-notice requests.
- Valid driver’s license with no time or state-based restrictions.
- Personal vehicle in presentable condition with full insurance coverage, or ability to maintain cleanliness and fuel receipts for rental vehicles.
Skills Requirements for Assessor
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in electrical distribution, lineman work, engineering, substation construction, or a certified Damage Assessor program (preferred).
- Ability to pass a proficiency exam during onboarding.
- Familiarity with smartphones as a backup to company-provided equipment such as an iPad.
