Position Summary
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at Mayers Memorial Healthcare District is responsible for delivering essential basic life support services in pre-hospital environments to injured or ill patients. This position involves patient transport, medical assessment, and prioritizing treatment according to established protocols. In collaboration with paramedics or other EMT’s, the EMT plays a vital role in stabilizing and managing patient care during emergencies, mainly when staffed for basic life support (BLS).
EMT’s interact with a wide range of individuals, including medical staff at base and outlying hospitals, physicians, emergency service agencies (fire, police, highway patrol), and ground ambulance personnel. Additionally, they engage with patients, their families, and public service groups for educational purposes and to maintain public relations.
Key Responsibilities

Emergency Medical Care: EMT’s provide pre-hospital care that is aligned with medical protocols and the local standard of care. When necessary, they assume the role of the primary care provider during BLS transfers or as deemed appropriate by their paramedic partner.
Patient Transport: Operates ambulances and other company vehicles following emergency driving guidelines set forth by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Department of Transportation (DOT).
Professional Conduct: Maintains a professional and safe demeanor while interacting with patients, families, public agencies, co-workers, and management. EMT’s are expected to uphold values of integrity, confidentiality, and competency at all times.
Recordkeeping: Responsible for maintaining accurate and timely medical documentation.
Education and Public Outreach: Acts as an educator to the public, students, and colleagues, providing feedback and promoting health education.
Collaboration: When required, works closely with other healthcare team members, including Emergency Department staff, especially during high patient volume.
Other Duties: Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary, including working overtime if required.

Qualifications and Experience

Certification Requirements: Candidates must hold a valid EMT certification in California and an EMT certification from the Sierra Sacramento Valley (SSV) or other approved Local Emergency Medical Services Agency (LEMSA). A Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification from the American Heart Association is required.
Driving Licenses: Applicants must have a valid California Driver's License, a clean driving record, and a California Ambulance Driver's License with a Medical Examiner's Certificate.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. EMT’s must communicate clearly with patients, their families, colleagues, and public service agencies.
Attitude and Adaptability: EMT’s are expected to maintain a positive working attitude, act as self-starters, and adapt to changes within a team-based management structure.

Additional Skills (Preferred but Not Required)

Experience operating emergency vehicles, working in an Advanced Life Support (ALS) system, or having pre-hospital and emergency medical services (EMS) experience is beneficial. Public education experience is also a plus.

Physical Effort and Working Conditions
The EMT role involves substantial fieldwork, including staffing, driving, and riding in ambulances. EMT’s must be prepared to operate under adverse working conditions, including high-stress trauma scenes, poor weather, and potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and airborne pathogens. The role requires physical endurance, including the ability to walk, stoop, climb, twist, bend, run, squat, kneel, and lift or transfer patients using various methods such as gurneys, stretchers, and stair chairs.
Hazards Include:

Operating and traveling in ambulances, often under emergency conditions.
Encountering confused or agitated patients.
Exposure to unknown diseases and trauma scenes.

EMT’s may also be required to work in rural areas and hike for short or extended distances to reach patients. The physical requirements of the job include lifting and carrying essential medical equipment, performing patient transfers, and safely operating emergency vehicles.
Computer Use Requirements
All EMT’s must be proficient in using the healthcare district's computer systems to communicate and access important company information. They are responsible for regularly checking and responding to company emails and participating in any training programs related to patient care and privacy.
Patient Privacy Responsibilities
The EMT must comply with the company's privacy policies and protect patient information as federal and state law requires. EMT’s are only authorized to access and share patient information as needed. EMT’s are expected to report any concerns or violations regarding patient privacy policies to the designated privacy officer. Additionally, participation in privacy training is mandatory.
