Responsibilities
- You will serve as a Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal, ensuring fire inspection and investigation requests are completed in a timely manner and in compliance with applicable statutory requirements and contractual obligations.
- You will conduct fire code compliance inspections and investigations.
- You will support community risk reduction and CLEAR team initiatives, including responding to fire scenes and assisting with Origin and Cause Investigations.
- You will supervise, lead, train, and coach a team of Deputy State Fire Marshals who will conduct fire code compliance inspections of facilities for compliance with all laws, regulations, adopted codes, and referenced codes.
- You will conduct, coordinate and plan licensing and permitting program investigations with other Agency stakeholders, including serving as a subject matter expert for LP Gas Board and Board of Pyrotechnic Safety Investigations.
- You will manage and facilitate State Fire’s Basic Fire Investigation program and other fire investigation related curricula and serve as an instructor.
- You will function as an essential staff member, as directed, for SEOC activations, the Palmetto Incident Support Team, or Emergency Response Task Force during ESF4 and ESF 9 incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- A high school diploma and experience conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a Deputy State Fire Marshal.
- ICC Fire Inspector I or equivalent.
- Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector II or equivalent within 1 year.
- Must understand the complexities of the Office of State Fire Marshal, stakeholders, applicable statutes, promulgated regulations, adopted codes, and standard operating procedures.
- Knowledge of SC Code of Law, SC Code of Regulations, and adopted editions of codes and standards.
- Ability to conduct inspections/investigations, analyze facts and reach appropriate conclusions.
- Knowledge of management principles.
- Ability to understand the agency's organizational structure, including the people who manage the work and the processes applicable to managing government work.
- Ability to interpret and apply codes, rules, and regulations while managing work and providing guidance to employees.
- Ability to make presentations and prepare reports.
- Must be able to work well under stress.
- Effective communication skills.
Other Requirements
- Must have a valid driver's license and 10-year MVR that complies with State and Agency Fleet guidelines.
- Position requires extensive statewide travel.
- Night, weekend, and holiday work are required.
- Overnight travel and ability to drive a state vehicle is required.
- May be required to work in inclement conditions, in buildings affected by fire and during disasters.
- Required to deploy as directed in an emergency response capacity as part of State Fire's ESF 4/9 coordination, as part of Firefighter Mobilization, as part of the Emergency Response Task Force, or Palmetto IST.
