Position Qualifications
An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant for the position. An example of acceptable qualifications: High School diploma or GED; completion of Firefighter II training program and Emergency Medical Technician course, as established by Fire Chief within first year of employment. Demonstrate the ability to handle the physical requirements of the job, and availability to work shift assignments.
Firefighter must participate in and satisfactorily complete training programs required by the Fire Chief. Programs shall include, but not be limited to river rescue, hazardous materials response, fire control systems and emergency victim care.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility with three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
Licensure Or Certification Requirements
State of Ohio motor vehicle operator's license; Firefighter II and Emergency Medical Technician certification within 1 year of employment.
Distinguishing Job Characteristics
Under general supervision, fights fires; protects and saves lives/property; encourages fire prevention. Maintains fire equipment and facilities. Firefighter shifts are normally 24 hours with 48 hours off between shifts. Work involves hazardous work combined with a variety of routine assignments while on-duty. Firefighters may be assigned to drive fire apparatus in addition to other responsibilities.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Reasonable accommodations will be made for disabled persons, covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, in accordance with its requirements.
Responds to emergency medical calls; fire alarms; follows firefighting and rescue strategies as directed by the Incident Commander.
Extinguishes fires. Places hoses and ladders in proper position, climbs ladder, operates pumps, directs streams of water or uses other extinguishing agents as appropriate. Ventilates structures by opening windows, cutting holes or other means. Operates aerial ladders, fire extinguishers, and other hand tools when needed. Works inside, outside or on top of burning and other smoke filled structures. Rescues persons trapped in burning buildings. Takes appropriate measures to protect and preserve lives and property.
Responds to vehicle and boating accidents, drownings, heart attacks, hazardous material spills, and other emergency situations. Administers emergency medical care and CPR; takes other appropriate actions to assist injured persons. Responds to other situations such as flooded basements, gas leaks, and other requests.
Conducts salvage operations. Places salvage covers, remove excess water, shovels debris, patches windows/holes and performs other cleanup as directed. Upon request, assists in fire investigations to determine origin of fire.
Cleans and maintains equipment in a safe operating condition. Refuels vehicles; refills water tanks; recharges air bottles and extinguishers; cleans trucks and hand tools; dries and reloads hoses and performs other work needed to return vehicle and equipment to service.
Maintains vehicles and equipment in proper mechanical operational condition. Utilizes daily and weekly checklists to ensure proper operation. Refers major mechanical repairs to the vehicle maintenance department.
Performs general maintenance and housekeeping duties to fire division facilities, building and grounds as directed. Cuts grass, sweeps/washes floors and walls, cleans living areas and performs general repair work. Checks flushes and paints hydrants as needed.
Performs fire prevention duties as assigned. Inspects commercial/public buildings, trains hospital/school personnel in evacuation procedures and use of extinguishers. Makes presentations on fire prevention to various age groups.
Completes fire and EMS run sheets, equipment check records, and other documentation as necessary.
Maintains/improves rescue, firefighting/emergency medical skills. Attends training sessions, studies material concerning fire hazards and firefighting/rescue methods. Maintains current knowledge of department technology, City Street/landmark locations and all division equipment.
Other Duties And Responsibilities
Conducts tours of firehouse and equipment to school children/public; and promote fire prevention and safety.

Working Conditions
Occasional exposure to extreme heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dirt, dust, toxic gasses, flames, hazardous chemicals, ice, smoke, flames and other potentially serious or life threatening hazards during firefighting operations, vehicle accident extrications/other rescue operations and with possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Employee must exercise firefighting and emergency safety precautions to prevent potentially serious burns, falling, and other rescue operations which could lead to serious or fatal injury. Employee must be knowledgeable in the proper patient lifting and packaging techniques on emergency medical runs.
Usual Physical Demands
The following physical demands are typically exhibited by position incumbents performing this job's essential duties and responsibilities. While fighting fires or performing other emergency rescue operations, the employee will have to occasionally work in confined spaces or at heights, work physically for extended periods of time under uncomfortable and dangerous conditions; lift persons and objects of varying weights, climb ladders, extend arms, crouch, crawl and perform other physical demands during emergency response. The employee normally uses usual vision demands. The employee normally must be able to converse with and hear coworkers while working as a team. During non-emergency or response times, the employee exhibits physical demands normally required to perform maintenance and other work.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of:firefighting; emergency medical skills; CPR; general building construction and materials; firefighting safety precautions; local street locations and landmarks.
Ability to: learn technical firefighting and emergency rescue/emergency medical principles and techniques; perform strenuous tasks under hazardous, stressful, inclement and uncomfortable conditions; withstand heights; lift persons and other heavy objects; exercise sound and prompt judgment in emergency; take orders; work as a team with others; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, law enforcement officers, and general public; work effectively in closed spaces.
Skill in: use of firefighting and rescue equipment; fighting fires; emergency medical techniques while responding to emergency situations.
Additional Information
Age Requirements
18 years of age for Firefighter appointment. No person shall be eligible to receive an original appointment on or after the person's forty-first birthday (O.R.C. 124.42).

Applicant Booklet
Applicants are required to read the Public Safety Information Book prior to application. The booklet provides additional information on selection procedures, agility requirements, background investigation, etc.
Eligible List
Applicants who attain a passing score of 70% on the written exam and pass the physical agility exam (all phases) will have their names on an eligibility list. The list will be arranged according to the scores from the highest to the lowest; it will then be used to fill current and future vacancies for two years or upon depletion thereof. Applicants must meet requirements of both parts of examination (written and physical agility) to be on the eligible list.
Military Credit
Applicants who have been honorably discharged from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible for additional credit of 20% on their exam provided a passing score is obtained. Copy of honorable discharge or Form DD214 must be submitted before exam. No credit is given if proof of discharge is submitted after the examination date. Proof of honorable discharge can be attached with the application but must be submitted before exam date.
Additional Credit
If a Firefighter candidate possesses a State of Ohio Firefighter Level II certification, an additional 10% will be added to their passing score. Proof of certification can be attached with the application but must be submitted before exam date.
If a Firefighter Candidate possesses a valid and current State of Ohio Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Paramedic Certification, an additional 10% will be added to their passing score. Proof of certification can be attached with the application but must be submitted before exam date.
If a Firefighter candidate possesses a valid and current State of Ohio Emergency Medical Technician certification Basic or Advanced Level, an additional 5% will be added to their passing score. Proof of certification can be attached with the application but must be submitted before exam date.
The maximum percentage attainable will be 20%, either via Military Credit or a combination of certifications. No credit will be given unless applicant has valid State of Ohio certifications. No credit will be given for applicant with certifications of the National Registry.
General Information
A thorough background investigation will be conducted into the applicant's work experience, reference checks, criminal activities, character, trustworthiness, and dependability. Applicant will also be subjected to a polygraph examination. Selected applicants will be subjected to a psychological exam and a physical/drug screen.
