O’Fallon Park sustained catastrophic tree damage during the May 16th tornado in St. Louis. An initial estimate of 350 trees were lost, leaving the park with few mature trees. Forest ReLeaf of Missouri is working with City Forestry to help replant every lost tree in the park on April 11. Forest ReLeaf of Missouri’s mission is to enrich communities by growing and planting trees through the power of people and partnerships. This effort supports our vision of a more resilient tree canopy in Missouri’s communities that supports healthy people, healthy habitats and a healthy planet.
Member Duties : This summer Forest ReLeaf is addressing disaster relief efforts from the May 16 tornado, which caused an estimated $1.6 billion in damages and torn down over 1,000 trees in North City St. Louis (the highest low-income region in the area).) AmeriCorps Summer Associates will support community-led recovery by growing and distributing free native trees to community groups and in this under-resourced area. Summer Associates will support this mission by coordinating weekly volunteer groups to water 350 newly replanted trees in O’Fallon Park, a site heavily damaged by the tornado. Additionally, they will manage maintenance and watering for 1,000 young trees at the newly launched City Tree Farm near the Scott Joplin House while engaging local residents in recovery-focused community events. By replacing the lost trees and adding tree cover to the area Summer Associates will reduce susceptibility to heat stroke and improve health conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure and cardiac arrest.
