Senior Mechanical Engineer
Scalables is building a new category of lab automation through Daisy, a modular, plug-and-play platform of pumps, valves, sensors, motion tools, and AI-enabled software that helps labs automate workflows faster and more flexibly than traditional systems. The company is focused on serving academic labs, biotech startups, pharma and CDMO process-development teams, and other users who need affordable, reconfigurable automation.
We are hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical product design and development across the Daisy platform. This is a hands-on, cross-functional role for someone who enjoys owning hardware from concept through prototype, testing, iteration, and productization while also helping shape how the product is presented, supported, and deployed in the real world.
You will work across engineering, applications, customer-facing activities, and commercialization efforts. In addition to designing and refining products, you will help manage vendors, drive R&D, improve quality and reliability, support application development, and contribute to technical content that helps customers understand what Daisy can do.
What you’ll do
- Lead mechanical design and development of Daisy instruments, modules, accessories, and integrated product assemblies
- Own products through the engineering lifecycle, from concept generation and prototyping through testing, refinement, and release
- Develop designs for manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, reliability, and cost efficiency
- Create and maintain CAD models, mechanical drawings, BOMs, design documentation, and prototype specifications
- Work closely with electrical, firmware, software, and applications teams to integrate complete electromechanical systems
- Manage external vendors, machine shops, fabricators, component suppliers, and contract manufacturing partners
- Evaluate parts, processes, and suppliers for quality, lead time, cost, and scalability
- Design and execute mechanical verification, functionality, and product quality testing
- Investigate failures, troubleshoot issues, and drive corrective design improvements
- Support development of application-specific configurations and customer-ready demo systems
- Contribute to customer support, technical discussions, field feedback analysis, and product refinement
- Help create technical visuals, product messaging, demo content, and other marketing-support materials in collaboration with the broader team
What we’re looking for
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
- 5-7 years of experience in mechanical product design and development, ideally in instrumentation, automation, robotics, fluidics, medical device, or other precision electromechanical systems
- Strong CAD skills and experience creating production-ready mechanical documentation
- Experience with prototyping, iterative design, tolerance stack-up thinking, and hands-on bench validation
- Experience working with vendors and external manufacturing partners
- Strong understanding of product quality, test methods, and practical hardware troubleshooting
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving startup environment with broad ownership
- Strong communication skills and comfort working across technical and commercial functions
Especially valuable experience
- Lab automation, fluidics, pumps, valves, tubing systems, motion systems, sensors, or benchtop instrumentation
- Sheet metal, machined parts, plastics, 3D printing, fixtures, or compact enclosure design
- DFM, DFA, reliability testing, and transfer to production
- Customer-facing engineering, applications engineering, or field feedback integration
- Experience creating technical content, visuals, or product storytelling materials for external audiences
