Nature of Work
This position serves as a district field engineer responsible for implementing the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) within an assigned District Office area. The role performs a broad range of engineering and technical functions for the Environmental Engineering Division (EED), including conducting EPA‑mandated Sanitary Surveys of public water systems (PWSs), providing technical and engineering assistance related to drinking water treatment and distribution, and reviewing engineering documents for Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council (IJDC) and Drinking Water Treatment Revolving Fund (DWTRF) projects.
The position also evaluates construction permit applications, responds to emergencies such as floods, blizzards, spills, and droughts, and collects critical field data to support public health protection. Additional duties include providing routine and emergency technical support to PWS operators, assisting in operator training courses to meet state and federal requirements, and advising public officials, consulting engineers, utility operators, developers, and the public on best public health engineering practices pursuant to WV Code 16‑1‑9. This is a field‑based role requiring 24/7/365 on‑call availability for emergency response and disaster relief. The Engineer Series currently has a 67% Vacancy Rate.
Minimum Qualifications:
Training: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Engineering.
OR
Substitution: Bachelor's degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited college or university with a major in Civil, Electrical, Electrical Design, Mechanical, Chemical or Mining Engineering Technology.
AND
Experience: Five (5) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid employment in engineering.
OR
Substitution: Master’s degree in engineering may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
Special Requirement: A valid driver’s license is required.
Pay: $58,329.00 - $103,488.00 per year
