Title: Transportation Director USD 405
Reports to: Superintendent
Supervises: Route and Activity Bus Drivers, Bus Aides, Vehicle cleaners.
Post Qualifications: Must possess a CDL with proper endorsements to legally transport students and operate air brakes. General mechanical knowledge of passenger vehicles, buses, and other large vehicles. Ability to work with and manage others. Ability to build positive relationships with students and staff of USD 405.
Purpose and Objectives of the Position: The Transportation Director will ensure the safe transportation of all students and staff in USD 405.
Work Day: As defined by the Superintendent, but to include:
- Minimum 8 hour workday, and 40 hour work week
- Should closely mirror typical school day but provide availability for issues with routes and activity trips
Essential Job Functions
- Ensure that all vehicles are clean and safe for travel.
- Ensure that irregular and scheduled vehicle maintenance including annual inspections are completed.
- Schedule vehicles and drivers as appropriate for requested transportation.o Communicate with Administration to ensure transportation request has been approved before scheduling
- Communication with the staff requesting transportation to ensure:? Vehicle is located where staff can easily access it
- Vehicle is properly sized for the needs of the trip
- Conduct periodic checks for efficiency of services and employee productivity.
- Preparation of special education bus routes; assure route descriptions and student data are current.
- Preparation of regular bus routes and assure route descriptions are current.
- Keep accurate and current records of vehicle status and mileage.
- High frequency of telephone use: addressing parental concerns; route
related questions; communicating with building administrators.
- Maintain accurate and complete district boundary maps.
- Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned.
- Familiar with and conform to all Federal and State laws, regulations, and district policies regarding school transportation for regular and special education.
- Provide driver training as required to meet State Requirements.
- Plan and present ten scheduled Driver's Safety Meetings per school year as required by State law.
- Supervise the implementation of the district's drug and alcohol testing for drivers.
- Check roads in inclement weather and advise superintendent of road conditions as needed.
- Schedule and attend annual inspections made by the Kansas Highway Patrol inspector.
- Completes state and local forms and reports as required. Reports should be updated on a regular basis and should not be last minute.
- Work with building and district administration to ensure information for PBRs and SO66 is complete and timely
- Ensure all other State, Local, and Federal forms and reports are complete and timely
- Reports will be submitted as required by State, Local, and
Federal policy and procedure and directed by the
Superintendent
- District Office Staff has the right to request reports at any time to ensure proper documentation is occurring.
- Maintains safety standards in conformance with state insurance regulations and develops a program of preventive safety.
- Recruits, trains, and supervises all transportation personnel, and makes recommendations on their employment, transfer, promotion, and release.
- Help prepare specifications for the lease or purchase of buses.
- Attend Scheduled Administrative Supervisor meetings.
- Attend or appoint a representative to attend IEP meetings as a subject matter expert in school transportation as needed.
- Ensure all school vehicles are prepared for safe operation by completing weekly inspections (passenger vehicles, buses, delivery vehicles, trailers, etc)o Mechanical

- Cleanliness (interior/exterior, windows, etc)
- Physical condition (dents, cracks, tears, etc)
Miscellaneous Additional Duties
- Substitute bus driver upon necessity.
- Daily Route and Activities Trips during normal school hours are part of the salary
- Transportation Director will be reimbursed at the Activity Driver rate for time outside of the Director's standard duty hours
- Transportation Director does not qualify for canceled trip
reimbursement
- Assist with new driver training and remedial training of current employees.
- Provide instruction during periodic in-service and training meetings.
- Perform periodic driver performance evaluations.
- Organize and conduct the interviews and hiring process of applicants for bus positions.
- Keeps Maintenance Records for all vehicles.
- Participate in any necessary investigative interrogatories with law enforcement officials.
- Participate in applicable accident reporting and investigation.
- Available by phone or radio to address and handle off-hour transportation related emergencies.
- Complete and dispatch insurance reports.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Superintendent
Student Management
- Handle school bus safety referrals in cooperation with the Director of Support Services and Administrators.
- Provide corrective interaction when necessary.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions
- Requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, or driving.
- Requires driving skills, which include turning and reaching, and the ability to operate a vehicle at night.
- Occasional exposure to various outdoor elements when investigating accidents or other responsibilities which would involve exposure to outdoor elements year-round.
- Must have ability to remain focused under stressful situations which could include severe student misconduct, "lost" or "misplaced" students, dissatisfied parents, mechanical emergencies, etc.
- Must have the ability to work in a noisy, crowded, stressful environment, with numerous interruptions.
- Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Acceptable Report from criminal history inquiry; acceptable driving record and acceptable to insurance underwriter; pass bus driver physical exam and pre-employment, random, and/or reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol screening.
- CDL license with proper endorsements.
- Defensive Driving and First Aid Certification.
- Three (3) years' experience, or five (5) years related experience.
- Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience operating office equipment, computers, district software, and driving all types of school buses.
- Ability to observe and follow all school district policies at all times.
- Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Must verify good health by passing a physical examination that includes TB and drug test as required.
- Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.
- Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.
- Maintain good community relations and a positive rapport with those you supervise and those you work with.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Basic mechanical knowledge and skill needed to address basic upkeep and repairs on all school vehicles.

Salary Information: To be determined by Superintendent and approved by the Board of Education. Will be partially based on experience, mechanical ability, and proper licensure.
