Job Summary:
The Director of Transportation provides high-impact operational leadership across transportation and field operations teams, translating strategy into results with authority and executive presence. This role partners closely with the Senior Director to ensure consistent leadership practices, operational discipline, and strong team development. The Director brings hands-on transportation experience and credibility with drivers and frontline teams, serving as a trusted decision-maker, coach, and problem-solver.
The Director drives operational excellence, fosters innovation, and encourages practical improvements that enhance safety, service quality, efficiency, and growth potential—all while maintaining alignment with senior leadership direction.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Lead and coach senior managers, setting clear expectations and holding teams accountable
- Maintain a strong, visible presence in the field to stay connected to operational realities and frontline teams
- Execute transportation and field operations priorities safely, efficiently, and reliably
- Make operational decisions that drive consistency, efficiency, and scalability across teams
- Identify and address operational gaps, process improvements, and resource needs
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging practical ideas from leaders and teams
- Translate field insights into operational improvements that support growth and customer satisfaction
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align priorities and drive results
- Monitor performance, track key metrics, and proactively address challenges
- Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, crane operations, and other regulations
Requirements
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, supply chain, operations, or a related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and significant operational leadership experience
- Hands-on experience in transportation or field operations, including driving or frontline roles
- Leadership experience managing managers in operational environments
- Proven ability to build strong teams and improve operational performance
- Credibility with drivers, field teams, and operational leaders
- Strong executive presence, coaching, problem-solving and communication skills
- Experience in construction, energy, heavy haul, crane operations, or multi-site operations preferred
Work Environment/Physical Requirements
The physical demands of are moderate and primarily align with field-based work that include traveling to operational sites.
Specific Requirements Include
- Regularly required to speak/present to management, governing offices, and customers.
- Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and climb or balance.
- Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Able to travel as directed by manager.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind if on location.
