General Statement of Duties
Perform intermediate protective service work in fire suppression; does related work as required.
Responsibilities and Duties
Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires; including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work; performs cleanup and overhaul work; assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment and cleaning fire station and grounds; helps check all equipment and apparatus; performs simple and routine maintenance; participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes; inspects, cleans, and maintains fire hose, pumps, hydrants and related equipment; assists in the enforcement of fire codes, may instruct in training classes; prepares and submits required reports; assists in conducting pre-planning studies; may be assigned to a special are or projects as necessary; performs other firefighting and related emergency tasks consistent with standards for position; tests hoses, breathing and related firefighting equipment. Operation of fire apparatuses, and all other duties required and requested by the Fire Chief or Supervisor.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and considerable experience as a Firefighter and Fire Equipment Operator and in first responder medical care; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge Skills and Abilities General knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to fire suppression; general knowledge of fire prevention and pre-planning strategies and techniques; general knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures; general knowledge of technical firefighting principles and techniques and techniques and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression; thorough knowledge of the streets system and physical layout of the Town; general knowledge of hazardous materials and accident extrication principles and techniques; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public, possession of mechanical aptitude. Must be able to operate fire apparatus and function as a driver and operator.
Physical Requirements
This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to operate machinery and perform skilled tasks of a non-repetitive nature. An employee is this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold; subject to hazards including exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation; subject to exposure to oils and cutting fluids; required to wear a respirator; and may be subject to frequently working in close quarters. An employee could potentially face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license, Class B CDL preferred; NC Firefighter certification; medical responder or higher.
