The newly created full-time IT Systems Engineer will support and enhance the county’s technology infrastructure. This position will be essential in maintaining stable, secure, and efficient systems that power critical public services. This role will focus on both systems administration and cybersecurity, with responsibilities that span server management, network reliability, endpoint protection, and cloud collaboration tools such as Google Workspace. The position is an onsite NOT remote position.
NOTE: The position will not start until January 2026.
ESSENSTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES including the following:
- Manage and maintain county infrastructure including physical and virtual servers, network equipment, and cloud-based platforms.
- Administer and support Google Workspace for Government, including user provisioning, email security, device management, and access control.
- Monitor and enhance cybersecurity across systems, networks, and endpoints, including managing firewalls, antivirus, patching, and vulnerability remediation.
- Respond to security alerts and incidents; perform root cause analysis and help coordinate remediation efforts.
- Maintain reliable backup systems and disaster recovery solutions.
- Support core infrastructure services including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and network segmentation.
- Automate routine administrative tasks using scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
- Assist with IT policy enforcement, cybersecurity training, and regulatory compliance (e.g., HIPAA, CJIS).
- Develop and maintain accurate documentation of systems, configurations, and standard procedures.
- Provide Tier 2/3 technical support for escalated issues from county departments and the help desk.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 3 or more years of relevant experience in systems administration or engineering, ideally in a security-conscious environment.
- Experience supporting Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) in an organizational setting is highly preferred.
- Government or public sector IT experience is a plus.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- CompTIA Security+, CySA+, or Network+
- Google Workspace Administrator Certification
- Cisco CCNA or Microsoft Certifications
- GIAC, ISC², or other security-related credentials
- Valid Driver’s License
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to interpret written instructions and code.
MATHEMATICAL/TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Strong knowledge of Windows Server, Virtualized environments (VMware or Hyper-V), and basic Linux administration.
- Hands-on experience with Google Workspace Admin Console, including Gmail, Drive, Groups, and endpoint management.
- Familiarity with network protocols, firewall configuration, VPNs, VLANs, and basic routing/switching.
- Experience with endpoint security tools, backup systems, and remote monitoring/management platforms.
- Scripting knowledge (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, or Python) for automation and task efficiency.
- Understanding of NIST or CIS cybersecurity frameworks and risk assessment principles.
