I. PURPOSE / SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, supervises the performance of skilled work in assisting accident victims and performing advanced emergency care including the administration of life sustaining treatment. Work involves serving as a supervisor of ambulance crews and, in the event that the other members of the crew are classified as Emergency Medical Technician ‑ Basic or Emergency Medical Technician ‑ Intermediate, Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic, etc., is responsible for the medical care administered to the patient. Employee is responsible for performing in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques and departmental policies and procedures, but must exercise considerable independent judgment in identifying a victim's condition and in applying life-sustaining treatment. Employee is exposed to the normal hazards of emergency medicine, including risk of exposure to infectious diseases.
II. RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) In absence of Operations Supervisor: Supervises response teams including Paramedics, and Emergency Medical Technicians which involves such duties as instructing, assigning and reviewing work, maintaining standards, acting on employee problems, selecting new employees, recommending promotions, discipline and counseling.
2) In absence of Operations Supervisor: Supervises Paramedics, and Emergency Medical Technicians who respond to emergency calls as a mobile medical unit attendant or driver; performs duties in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, local ordinances, established policies, procedures and protocols, and within established chain of command; refers to policy manuals as necessary. Conducts annual performance evaluations on all employees assigned on a shift.
3) Must be able to perform all duties and skills set forth for the Paramedic.
4) Manages day-to-day operations on an assigned shift; ensures maintenance of vehicles. Delivers and issues supplies to stations and personnel.
5) Implements quality assurance programs; attends meetings as directed.
6) Maintains narcotic and non-narcotic drug stocks in order to provide replacements for all ambulances and stations; performs duties such as proper record keeping, quality assurance, tracking and control of all narcotics
7) Assesses and evaluates situations of emergency response.
8) Provides medical care at the Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support levels
9) Gains access to and moves patient, as appropriate, when on scene, utilizing protective equipment and taking quickest route to patient in consideration of safety of patient, and EMS personnel; supervises patient safety during extrication procedures; sees that patient is prepared for transport in accordance with approved treatment protocols.
10) Wears protective equipment when on scene; avoids contact with bodily fluids of patients when possible, and reports incidents of significant exposure; cleans or discards contaminated equipment, according to established policies and procedures.
11) Responds to incidents of multiple casualties in accordance with established disaster response plans; recognizes need for hazardous material response personnel and calls for assistance accordingly; performs in accordance with established protocols for handling patients exposed to hazardous materials.
12) Maintains clear and concise communication with EMS personnel, hospital personnel, medical personnel, utilizing two-way radios, or telephones, as available; establishes rapport with family members of patients or bystanders.
13) Performs inspections; prepares reports and logs of observations, incidents and treatments performed; documents deviations from standard operating procedures, ensuring that deviations are in best interests of patient.
14) Operates mobile medical unit in accordance with state law and established procedures for parking and backing at scene; determines shortest route to scene of call and proceeds accordingly; inspects and tests ambulances and their emergency equipment; completes logs and forms to check out equipment; ensures that they are in proper and good working order, and are stocked with supplies and materials; makes routine adjustments, but reports other than minor defects for specialized attention.
15) Attends conferences, seminars, workshops, classes, lectures, etc., as appropriate.
16) Researches and maintains knowledge of trends and developments in the field of emergency medicine and emergency medical treatment; completes course work as required to obtain and maintain certifications; participates in activities of department committees and/or professional organizations, as appropriate.
17) Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Services facility.
18) Assists in training of new personnel.
19) Other duties as assigned.

III. SKILLS/EDUCATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
1) Excellent communication skills. Experience interacting with community groups or forums.
2) Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction.
3) Required Education and Experience
· Associate's Degree in Emergency Medical Science with at least three years of experience in emergency medical service; or an equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
· Five years emergency response experience.
· Moderate knowledge of MS Office suite software. Experience in the use and management of various software packages related to EMS operations, billing and financial management.
· Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
IV. CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
· Current South Carolina and National Registry Paramedic Certification
· South Carolina Driver’s License
· Basic Cardiac Life Support (Instructor Preferred)
· Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Instructor Preferred)
· Pediatric Advanced Life Support (Instructor Preferred)
V. SUPERVISION:
