We are seeking a talented and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will be able to meet project objectives independently, or by leading a small team to complete all aspects of our custom measurement machinery design, from concept through fabrication and test.

A typical product lifecycle starts with the sales order and ends roughly 32 weeks later with the shipment of the product. The Mechanical Design Engineer is first in line to scope and conceptualize the product and will have several groups following his/her lead in rapid succession: electrical engineering, software engineering, mechanical build, electrical build, controls engineering, product quality, and field installation.

Our ideal candidate will be proficient in 3D solid design using Solidworks, MS Office, GD&T, Product Data Management tools, general automation design, and have at least two-years of experience in a design or project engineering role. Knowledge of balancing, modal analysis, vibration analysis, rotor dynamics, robotics, machining processes—including welding, milling, drilling, and grinding are desired.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Review final quotations from the Sales Team and compare them to the customer purchase order for accuracy
Work indirectly with the customer to ensure that the machine will meet the customers’ needs, typically a Program Manager will liaison between the design engineer and the customer
Review customer specs, when applicable, to ensure equipment meets quoted standards
Responsible for all part prints and manufacturing prints, and thoroughly organizing all projects and parts
Keep electronic designs up to date with the latest dimensions and notes
Release manufacturing prints to BTI machine shops and other outside vendors
Prints must be comprehensive and include all necessary GD&T
Our Content Marketing Team will assemble final documentation manuals, machine manuals, and other documents for the customer
Develops mechanical design of tooling and equipment to support the project objectives
Works closely with Manufacturing, Controls Engineering, and Project Management to follow a project from its inception to the final customer acceptance and sign-off, provides follow up and support after this point
Coordination of all internal and external mechanical design activities
Reviews and releases final engineering drawings to the manufacturing department
Leads, organizes and participates in design review meetings for internal, as well as outsourced, designs
Ensures the equipment being started up and commissioned operates in accordance with the approved customer specification
Conduct proper line ups when handing projects off to internal Teams for further engineering and/or build
Reviews all mechanical engineering drawings prior to final release, ensuring compliance for customer buyoff
Work independently as well as in a team environment
Work under direction of a Lead designer to help provide mechanical design expertise to the project to meet scope, schedule, and customer commitments
Prioritize and schedule work assignments to meet deadlines or as directed
Managing multiple project designs to complete on timeline and within budget using engineering principles and techniques
Using research, analytical, conceptual, and planning skills, particularly mathematical modeling, and computer-aided design

Required Qualifications/Requirements:

BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering
2+ years of experience in machine design
Strong technical communication skills
Proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel as communication and analysis tools
Excellent analytical skill bringing engineering principles to bear on all facets of machine design – from concept through delivery and into production
Ability to devise and perform tests to demonstrate design principles
A working knowledge of GD&T methods
Automation, Machine Tool, Automotive, Aerospace, Medical Device or other Industrial experience preferred

An applicant with a keen technical interest or experience in one or more of the following areas will be preferred:

Specialized experience with automation, part handling, work holding, dimensional gaging, milling, drilling, or welding processes
Expertise in the design of resistance welding systems – component specification, electrode design, and weld schedule development
Expertise in the design and specification of fluid power systems and controls – air, oil, and water
Working experience in SolidWorks/Simulation or other finite element analysis tools is a plus
Rigid body or flexible rotor dynamics and balancing processes
